Thought Suppression As A Preventative Policy Of The Thought

Suppressing a thought is never easy. One can reveal this in a minute simply by resolving to prevent a thought about something or anything. Thoughts at once seem to be extra important to resolve, even while other thoughts bring to mind as detractors and unwanted thought intrudes yet again but still it can be appealing to suppress some thoughts under certain circumstances.

One might envision the composed mental landscapes that expect them to escape the unwanted thought. Freedom from unpleasant emotions, hurtful memories, and odious addictions or else toward impulses, doubts, obsessions, and uncertainties about the future lies ahead. Also one might come to a decision to suppress those thoughts in spite of no matter what difficulty this alternative might mean.

Normally suppressing thoughts is a common form of mental control in accordance to this it is explored that it can be counterproductive and can help that specific mind state one tried to escape. It is certain of those disturbing thoughts that with bleak accuracy mental clockwork proceeds such thoughts back to mind each time one tries to hold them back. As to these consequences, it is alluring to attribute particular importance or control to suppress thoughts to observe these thoughts as terminology of disturbed mechanism of mind. It also led Freud (1953) to study the nature of the thoughts that be excluded from consciousness.

Wenzlaff & Wegner (2000) explained this phenomenon as it possibly not be particularly useful to ascribe importance to unwanted thoughts themselves.Investigations suggest that the process of thought suppression is not the product that be supposed to examine for its importance and power. This understanding emerged from those studies where participants were instructed not to think about some particular thought for specific time period. Previous research hinted to such commands might create a thought to return (Antrobus et al., 1964).

According to Wegner et al. (1992) initially the interplay of two processes is accountable for this outcome. In which a conscious operating process that is accountable used for mental deflection by focused on content other than the objective thought, whereas, in order to check whether the operating process that requires greater cognitive capacity and that controls for unnecessary thoughts or intrusions is desirable or not. Operating process is weakened also unwanted thoughts become more reachable with the increase of cognitive demands such as sleep whereas monitoring process continues its activity. With amplified freedom, messy lifestyle, dormitory living, changeable schedules, frequent deadlines, self-responsibility, social and educational obligations university life is accompanied by many demanding challenges. Students willingly modify their sleeping habits in order to cope with these challenges.

According to Trockel, (2009), it was noticed that students experiencing sleep deprivation mostly try to stay away from more complicated tasks, whereas, Friedman (2003) explored that poor sleepers often are not aware about the difficulties they are experiencing in their academics that can directly linked to their poor sleep quality and by finding those with a lower cognitive ability getting better scores on a test than them might get them depressed. Explaining the fact about why people are clueless and puzzled about their results (Pilcher, 1997).

Thought Suppression

Sigmund Freud is to blame for both what is known and not known regarding thought suppression (TS) by initiating the study of repression. Repression is a type of provoked ignorance both intentional as well as unintentional with or without forgetting. Currently repression is the expression for unplanned unaware forgetting whereas; suppression has understood as the planned and conscious exclusion of thoughts from the conscious consideration (Greenwald, 1988). One does not commonly experience forgetfulness for unwanted thoughts but, rather, in everyday life conscious struggle may be undertaken frequently against those unwanted thoughts by hoping these thoughts can be set aside from more conscious awareness.

Conscious efforts to suppress the unwanted thoughts are reported by normal as well as the those who are suffering from different problems i.e. depression, anxiety, worry, OCD, PTSD and addiction etc

Suppression happened due to the instigated mental disturbance that might have greater psychological impact despite the fact that repression has extended overshadowed suppression in the literature of psychology. It may seem that one choose to suppress thoughts randomly, controlling oneself by the urge and are usually brought to this pass by expected circumstances that place them in a sole state of mind.

Thought suppression provoked while one’s situation prompts the inhibition of various external expression of thoughts. In general, the external expressions one make effort to prevent gets in the form of communications or might be in the forms of actions or emotional expressions. Either way, thought suppression is attempted as a preventative policy intended at inhibition of the explicit psychological consequences of the thought.
