Van Gogh And How His Work Speaks For Himself
The artist I would like to talk about how his work speaks for himself is one of my favourite artists which actually inspired me a lot to take art as a career and go forward with it is Vincent Van Gogh. He was a famous impressionist, whose art spoke for him and told people what really happened with him and he actually wrote his autobiography by painting.
The Van Gogh style of painting was so expressive and so unique that the every painting of spoke for itself about a different instance or state of mind. His signature style was characterized by heavy brush strokes, cloppy, crude and was considered childish compared to the other photographic and realistic artists. Selling only one painting throughout his career allegedly made him depressed. On the contrary i feel it served as motivation for him to somehow keep trying to make more paintings so that people might like. Van Gogh’s art told people what he felt and what was going into his mind. In his whole life he only sold one painting which put him into a poverty stricken state. The starry night, one of his famous work is something i would like to talk about. This painting made me really feel what van gogh felt at the point of time and also tells me a lot about the kind of person i imagine he was. Van Gogh painted starry night in a mental hospital just after the famous ear incident with Gauguin.
Talking about the painting, when I first saw starry night without even looking at the artist who painted this, I sensed isolation and sadness in this painting. I felt that every stroke spoke to me and no two strokes were the same. It made me realise that how bold yet dark the painting is. The movement in the painting is something what really told me a lot about van gogh, what i really felt seeing the painting was how van gogh must be in complete depression when he was in that room of a mental hospital. He wasn’t given that freedom to go out there and paint do what he wants. For him life wasn’t not running as it should be. Being depressed and lonely made him give that life to that painting. Rather than not getting that freedom he found the freedom in his work. The painting looks so loose and gives the feeling of carefree but it actually was an escape from the reality thinking what it would be like to live free and be out there and enjoy the freedom. Colors in the painting told me how dull the situation is around him and how dark and cold the room might be. The light from the stars and moon was so brightly painted by van gogh because i felt van gogh was calling upon a God or Holy Spirit and asking him for to help.
