What are Characteristics of an Effective Leader

Effective leader definitely can create and provide a positive impact on the performance and productivity of the organisations' employees. The environment is conducive to enable staff to have the tools and motivation to implement change or achieve tasks. An effective leader is able to create conditions where employees have a willingness to work harder and better for the benefit of the organisation. But what are the characteristics of an effective leader? This essay states that effective leaders are able to be effective communicators who can ensure the team understands what is expected from them. This can help to reduce misunderstanding and conflict, by identifying things needing to be addressed early.

An effective leader is able to set clear goals and targets. This enables everyone to know and understand what is to be achieved and then consider how this will be achieved. An effective leader is able to empower their team. When you take the time to know and identify the key skills within your team this will enable them to know what tasks to give to individual members and the collective team. The leader must also be supportive to his team and create an atmosphere where staff feel free to bring issues up which can be addressed early before it reaches crisis. They also need to know what weaknesses exist in the team so that they can better support those individuals to grow and develop. Either through buddy system where they can shadow those with more experience or make feel staff valued because the staff is able to share their knowledge and skills as an example of good practice. This will help empower a team, and aid in team collaboration as well as the collaboration between team leader and the rest of the team. It will also allow staff to be trained with additional skills and experiences. An effective leader must be committed to achieving the goals that have been outlined, firstly to set an example and also to ensure these are followed through. As an effective communicator the leader will be able to get the team on board to be ambitious and to enable others to feel the work they do is meaningful and is part of a bigger picture. This will all contribute to in increase in productivity.

They are able to offer solutions to problems as well as be able to listen to suggestions made by other members of the team and acknowledge good ideas when raised. They do not feel threatened by others doing well rather they encourage it.
