Leadership styles
Leadership is the action and ability of being able to lead and give direction to a group of people or an organization. Throughout the movie a number of different leadership styles are portrayed. Autocratic leadership styles are a leadership style when one-person controls all the decisions and takes very little input from other group members. In the film The Internship the autocratic leadership style is used by Mr Chetty, he is the head of the internship group. Mr Chetty gives you instructions and you must do it and when you do it must be done correctly. He has no time for other people's input or opinions and he does not put up with arguments. He is very strict and likes to stick and play by the rules, he's a man who feels no pity for others. This leadership style works well in the movie as it is excellent for inexperienced workers as there is lots of control and that is what interns need but it leads to one-way communication which can lead to poor decision making.
In the film we see this leadership style in the scene where Mr Chetty told all the interns to log into their google accounts to keep track of their calls for the google help centre so that they can determine the winner of the challenge, however Billy did not listen, he did not log in, so he got zero points for the challenge and Mr Chetty did not care. Laissez faire leadership styles is when the leader gives you very little guidance or direction. They allow group members to have their say and input in the decision-making process. This specific leadership style is used by Lyle in the movie.
Lyle is the leader of Nick and Billy's team who works at Google. Lyle instructs his team on what they need to do and achieve and then gives the team the freedom to decide on how they are going to achieve it. He is very open to people's ideas and trusts that the interns will get the work done on their own. Lyle observes how the work is done but he does not intervene. This type of leadership style is risky as it can result in lack of commitment and responsibility however it allows for me creative thinking and better motivation. In the film we see this leadership style in the sceneTransformational leadership style is when the leader inspires people to achieve remarkable results. The leader encourages and motivates the team in order to reach unexpected results and allows input from the group members. In the movie Billy and Nick are transformational leaders as they are always creating a positive atmosphere. They are proactive and very inspirational. We see this in the movie during the scene that they are playing Quidditch. In the first half Billy and Nicks team was losing badly, at half time Billy and Nick gather their team together to have a team talk. During the team talk they motivate one another and remind the team to not give up cause there is still a chance to win. In the second half they make a huge comeback, and, in the end, they only lose by one point.
Teamwork
Teamwork is the combined action of a group. Throughout the movie there are a number of teamwork situations both good and bad. During the scene at the Quidditch match Billy and Nicks team were not working together. They were arguing and could not come to an agreement. They had to use the teamwork problem solving steps in order.
