My Current Day Living Hero (Role Model)

Many of us have role models in our lives and most people have athletes, movie stars or other celebrities as their role models. However, to me a role model not necessarily mean a celebrity, he/she can even be a simple person, who has positively influenced other’s life and helped others in grooming their personality and characteristics. They are the people, someone can look up to for their advice in hard situations, and considered they will give their words of wisdom. Instead of judging others’ past actions, they always try to help others without demotivating them. A perfect role model for me is my maternal uncle (My Mamu) Dr Surinder Kumar Batra.

Currently, he is working as Research Investigator in Department of Pathology, Michigan Medicine, University of Michigan, United States of America. He did his schooling from Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Karnal and earned his bachelor degree in medical science from Govt. Post Graduate College, Karnal, followed by master degree in biotechnology from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra. He is a recipient of CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) research fellowships for his Ph. D. work at Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh. As he completed his Ph. D. in Dec. 2011, he received an offer from the University of Michigan for post-doctorate training fellowship, and then he moved to USA along with his wife. Since then, he is continuously committed with his hard research work on cancer and other aspects of Cell Biology. He has published many articles in renowned research magazines. Recently, he becomes a research faculty member at the same University. Beyond his achievements in his life, he is also a wonderful human being. He’s smart, wise, ambitious, patient and such a loving person.

Though, there are no words that can express my gratitude towards him, but through this essay I will try to describe some of his characteristics that makes him my role model. He belongs to a simple back ground. Among three sisters and two brothers, he is the youngest one. From the days of his schooling, he has a clear mindset for his goalsin life. Even with limited resources, he achieved what he wanted to have with his persistent hard work. This is the most important thing that inspired me a lot. He is very sincere, truthful and always ready to help others in need. Even though he is physically far away from me, I’m confident that he will always be there for me with his help, love, and care. He is always in a good mood. Now, like my mamu, I’m a positive thinker and a creative person who believes that with hard work and constant efforts, one can create life of his/her dreams. I also know that if I have to make any critical decisions in my life, I can always rely on him for useful advice because he has that wisdom and experience. I can truly count him as my mentor as I know he will always provide me his honest feedback, which will be in my favour, even if it is something that I don’t want to hear. Whenever I looked at him for his valuable guidance to complete any given assignment in a better way, he was ready to give his best all the time. Here, I am mentioning some of the occasions when he assisted me to make things better:Recently with his valuable suggestions I prepared a speech on probiotics, which I had to deliver in the memory of Elie Metchnikoff (Russian Noble Prize Winner and Father of Modern Immunology) at National Dairy Research Institute (N. D. R. I. ), Karnal. My presentation on this event was well taken by the audience and I was awarded second place for the same.

Further, not only he motivated me to participate in National Science Olympiad, but also helped me to get prepared for this competitive exam. He clears so many doubts, I had while preparing for this exam. This earned me first position at school level followed by good ranking at zonal level. Unequivocally, he is a constant source of motivation, who always encourages me to perform my best in my curriculum as well as extracurricular activities. When results of my class VIII was declared, I was little depressed as I got second place. At that time he told me to take this as a healthy challenge and should do more hard work honestly. His words of motivation encouraged me to give my best in class IX class and with all my hard work I earned first position. He is the person who pushed me to try everything in life and not to run away from anything that comes as a challenge. His constant dedication towards my interest and hobbies motivated me to pursue the same with more enthusiasm. He taught me not to give up in any situation and to face every adversity with a clean and composed mind. In nutshell, I would say my mamu is one of the best people I know. Whether he knows it or not, he is my biggest role model and someone I have looked up to for his amazing character for as long as I can remember.
