Why Corruption Is Inevitable With Power

Corruption has existed for ages. It has become prominent around the world, without an end in sight. It is commonly defined by Oxford Dictionary as “Dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power”. Which begs the question is corruption inevitable with power? Lack of regulation in campaign contributions has been the cause of the rise in corruption. It has become impossible to stop the rise due to it allows billion dollar corporations to influence Politicians by paying them large sums of money to advertise, job and food. As a result, politician remains indebted to their highest benefactors.

Greed is a part of human nature because it is apart of our primal instinct of wanting what we don't have. That is why once someone gains power it is inevitable that he or she becomes corrupt. The more power that is gained the more egocentric a person becomes and the more they fail to see the perspectives of others and pursue only their goals. That is why you cannot simply replace those who are corrupt because no matter how pure the person may seem, sooner or later they will be swallowed by corruption.

Power can persuade and alter the actions of a person, while also removing their moral ethics, as stated by British politician Lord Acton “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Meaning, that a person's sense of morality lessens as his or her power increases. Harvey Weinstein, who was once respected by his peers, is a perfect example of this, he abused his power and reputation to rape more than 80 women over the span of 30 years. But when looking into the situation it has become imminent to wonder why he has continued down his path of abuse for 30 years.

The reason as to why he continued to assault women for 30 years is the same reason a thief repeats his cycle of theft. They do it because it gives them a rush of excitement, especially if they get away with the crime because they become more confident, thus they continue to abuse others. Due to the increase in power over the span of 30 years Harvey Weinstein has lost his sense of morality. He has clearly known the difference between what is right and what is wrong but does continue down the same path. Lacking compaction for not only his action but also the consequences they may have on his victim.
