Rethinking Homework: An Argument for Its Abolishment
In the essay “Why Homework Should be Banned Essay”, we will be trying to answer the question ‘Should students be given homework?’. To ensure that this essay is unbiased, we will take a look at both sides of the argument in order to remain fair.
1 - Why students shouldn’t get homework (backed up by a credible source)
One of the main reasons why students should not be forced to do homework on top of the schoolwork they already do is because too much homework can lead to an increase in stress levels, and can make students overtired if they don’t have enough time to sleep. Overtired students are less able to focus on their work, and so will produce poor quality work in school, which can have a detrimental effect on their grades. A study by Stanford University found that 56% of students considered homework to be a primary source of stress. Although 43% of students did not think that homework was a primary stressor (43% viewed tests as a primary stressor), less than 1% of students surveyed thought that homework was not a stressor. Many students confessed that the amount of homework they had led to sleep deprivation and other concerning health issues.
2 - Another reason (backed up by credible sources)
Homework should be banned from all schools in the UK as it is putting unnecessary stress on the children and older kids. It has not just been affecting students but also parents are being affected as many kids struggle doing homework at home as they may have trouble remembering what went on in class which means parents have to step in to help them. When it gets to this stage kids are very stressed out and frustrated as they are not able to complete their work by themselves and then start doubting and comparing themselves to other students. It can take some kids hours to complete a task when it should only take around 20 mins therefore kids will be doing their homework when they are tired and stressed out. This means teachers don't see what they can do when they don't have the help and support they need. If this happens frequently this will put a lot of stress on the family every time their kid has homework. A study found that the pressure of homework causes lots of friction between children and families also homework can take good quality time away from the student as they should be spending their time doing exercise and community activities which help with important life skills
3 - Why students should get homework (backed up by a credible source)
On the other hand, many people argue that students of all ages should get homework. They believe that homework teaches students valuable skills - not just the homework content itself, but also time management skills, revision skills, and communication skills. It is vital for students to learn how to revise, and which methods work best for them (common ways of revision are verbal, repetition, and reading). If students are able to revise effectively before they have exams, then they are likely to do better in their exams as they will find revision a common practice.
4 - Another reason (backed by credible sources)
Another reason why students should get homework is because it helps guides them.
5 - Conclusion - summarise points
To conclude, homework can be seen as both good and bad for students because a good thing about giving homework is that it helps students learn helpful skills with revision and management but on the contrary homework such as revision can increase students' stress and anxiety which then can carry on to how they work in school. Another bad thing with giving students homework is that it leads to some students being sleep deprived and then the students who are overtired are not able to focus in classes to link back to the research that was found in the first point it shows,
