Why I Enjoy Playing The Cello
I wish I could say I wanted to play this instrument every since I heard it for the first time on the television or I wish that I could say that I begged my parents to buy me a cello when I was younger so that I could get a head start before all the other children. But honestly and truthfully, I only played because my mom had played it when she was young. Both my siblings played instruments from a young age, as well. So it was before a blink of an eye that my hands got on that matte, light brown colored cello.
I began playing the cello when I was in the 6th grade. When my mom mentioned the fact that I would be playing an oversized violin, I hated the idea and frankly I didn't want to be like her at all, and it wasn't until middle school that I realized that I had a strong connection and bond with playing this cello; it had just taken me until then to realize it.
According to Luccas Chen, the cello is also one of the most flexible of the string instruments, which is able to play super high with a squeaky pitch, and in just a split second, sink down and cause a vibration using all of those lower notes of a cello. All the excitements, inspirations, and love of playing the cello would not have been possible had it not been for the encouragement and dedication that I gave (and had from the help of my parents and teachers) in the very beginning. Playing in an orchestra opened a new feeling of having a passion for me because I have been learning more and more about my the cello and how best to play it, and that could never be replaced.
Music can be and is considered to be a universal language that can be shared with people everywhere. This is one of the various reasons that I am passionate about sharing my talent and gift with people in different places like the time I had the opportunity to play in a couple nursing homes and a plethora of times in the school auditorium for parents at concerts and even for judges during contest season. In a way, music is connecting those people in a unique and lasting way. A variety of people have most likely heard a song and then suddenly remembers or takes them back to a time or the place when you first heard it or shared it with another person as well. Just a single musical moment in their life can bring out thoughts and memories of a certain place, person or even an event. Which is one thing I will always remember because ever since my mom introduced to me the feeling of a cello in my hands, I’ve enjoyed every single moment of my teacher correcting my out of tune notes and my mom becoming more rational about the amount of time that I’ve been practicing every day.
Knowing that I am able to not only communicate through words and speak, I also can communicate through playing the cello with music. “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” - Victor Hugo
