Why I Want To Be an Engineer: Personal Experience

What’s your dad’s profession? Asked my social teacher while explaining Social stratification. “Engineer”- I answered, she asked your mom? “Engineer”-I said. she looked to the class and said profession is not hereditary her parents did not inherit it from their parents. She looked at me again, and asked what are your grandparent’s profession? “Engineers, occupational mobility does not work in my family!” I replied I want to be an engineer too. Yes, I did inherit my passion and insatiable curiosity which had benefited my academic career. This is why I want to be an engineer essay where I will share my personal story.

My dad used to take me to his office, conferences and exhibitions. As a mechanical engineer, he’d ask me questions about what I’d been seeing. I learned about plastic injection moulding and tool engineering walking around the magnificent machines halls. It has never bored me instead raised curiosity in my mind that resulted in me understanding complex mechanisms, I channeled my passion towards engineering at a tender age. One of my favorite memories is the time he taught me how to manufacture a plastic bowl in his tool room I was eight; didn’t have complete knowledge about machines but still, wanted to make multiple things.

My mother, an electronics engineer noticed my intellectual curiosity and encouraged me through out. My interest does limit at machines but technology as whole. My mother thought me programming at eight, my first program was a basic calculator in visual basic. I still feel the satisfaction as I write this. I then learnt C, C+ and Python, due to my understanding in programming I was elected cyber club secretary.

I get a great sense of achievement from solving intense numerical and seeing how they link into the real world. Upon glancing at the equation of faraday’s law it can seem like an advance mathematical concept but what interests me, is understanding how this applies to various situations, like the relation with flux or electricity in vacuum. For me these are not just calculations done to pass the test but, are the modelling of what the future will become- discovering new technologies and enhancing the way we already live.

I’m independent and self-motivated, my family provided opportunities for me to learn by trial and error. When I was ten my parents bought home a microwave, I always read the entire manual in search of nifty features, while reading it I discovered an important feature “child lock” which my mind read as “parent lock”. By following the instructions, I enabled it, thus protecting my parents from the hazards of using it without my supervision. Well, that ended up in my parents calling the customer survives as they thought it was malfunctioning.

As a high schooler I got involved in a program called Atal Innovation Mission. I worked on multiple projects including ‘automated street lighting’, which would glow when detected motion and ‘7-inch farm’, an application designed to help farmers keep track of the water level in the soil. Though I’m know as an athlete, my hidden talent is art. I believe theater, music and painting are supreme sources of entertainment and joy.

Pivotal part of my identity comes from my childhood experiments and influences that have also fueled my passion and dedication. I have an analytical mind and a natural curiosity for finding out about how things function and how they are constructed. Watching terminator, power rangers and avengers, all these movies always made me think how do they do it? Science is where all the magic happens, simplest concept of newton’s third law supports rocket science. I believe science is not meant to be memorized but to be understood and that’s possible when its relatable i.e., practical knowledge. I work to materialize my daydreams of a better tomorrow into reality.
