World Hunger: The Problem And Solution
“Being hungry means more than just missing a meal. It’s a debilitating crisis that has more than 820 million people in its grip”. It’s a continuous cycle that doesn’t end due to the people suffering from hunger are not able to work and or provide for their families because they are malnourished. An organization called The Sustainable Development Goal has taken on this global issue and want to eliminate hunger by the year 2030. We can reach this goal by helping the ones in need and donating meals with the proper proteins people need. Problem Research done by The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States estimates that nine point one million people die of starvation each year making eight thousand five hundred of them being children and that hunger is more common in developing countries like Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. A reason why hunger must end is because it is estimated that sixty-seven million children do not attend school due to the parents not being able to afford an education for their children or parents force their children to stay at home and help earn money for food. According to UNICEF, hunger must come to an end since women who are underweight are malnourished and are most likely to give birth to children who are undernourished making it a twenty percent chance that the babies would not even live beyond the age of five. Hunger is most common in countries like Central African Republic, Chad and Yemen. Each of these countries are suffering from unpredictable weather patterns and or violence and conflict that contribute to the increase of hunger. Since the abundance of food in their country causes them to move to their neighboring countries causing them to suffer as well. In Central African Republic, also known as CAR, are suffering: “Undernutrition is a major problem, with 39 out of 71 local districts experiencing severe acute malnutrition above the emergency threshold (2%)”. The major cause to their hunger issue is due to the instability, conflict and ethnic violence because of these major issues, humanitarian assistance is more difficult to provide. Chad is having a major crisis due to the food insecurity they face making the infant mortality rate increase as well as diseases. “
According to the National Nutrition Survey of 2018, global acute malnutrition stands at 13.5%, of which 4% is severe. 4.5 million people - 27% of the country's population - face food insecurity, 991,000 of whom are severely food insecure, according to the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs”. One of the main causes of this issue in Chad is due to their unpredictable weather such as drought and rain. On top of having a brutal conflict, Yemen is the lowest income country due to the violence and insecurity they face. “As of December 2018, 24 million Yemenis needed humanitarian assistance, 27% more than last year. Two-thirds of regions are already in a pre-famine situation, and one-third is facing serious vulnerabilities. With regards to water, sanitation and hygiene, 17.8 million people do not have access to the necessary facilities, and 19.7 million people lack access to adequate health care. A massive cholera epidemic has also affected the country”. Resources remain limited to the people of Yemen because of the battle they are facing with the West, making hunger in Yemen increase each year. Goal Since hunger is a global issue that is affecting millions of people, the goal every year is to keep reducing the problem until hunger does not exist. Hunger is reducing each year but to make it disappear, according to the United Nations, the amount of money needed to help the people suffering from hunger will be thirty billion dollars annually. Like The Sustainable Development Goal, I will like to eliminate hunger by the year 2030. Hunger must end, or it will keep on increasing each year making adults and children in various countries suffer. Otherwise, hunger will keep on affecting millions of people causing them illnesses and even death. Solution Going back to the issues that caused the top three countries, Central African Republic, Chad and Yemen, to have more than half of their population suffer from hunger were either due to unpredictable weather and or conflict.
We shouldn’t be able to change the unpredictable weather patterns, but we can find ways to help them come up with a method to grow crops in those unpredictable conditions. As for conflict we can also help them resolve any problems that they are dealing with or come up with some type of compromise. But I also think the reason for so much conflict might be because of the being hungry. People tend to get very angry when they get hungry and that’s where the word hunger came from. A way to bring people together is having a common enemy and the enemy for them would be hunger and how they can combat this problem and get rid of it once and for all. Hunger is an ongoing cycle, if you grow up hungry you are less likely to go to school, you are more likely to get sick, you are less likely to work to provide for yourself and or family, therefore you are not able to afford food and any other necessary resources and that cycle continues and continues and we must put a stop on it. Not only are these countries suffering from hunger but there are also other underlying issues such as lack of resources. Some of the resources they lack are freshwater and adequate health care. Conclusion In conclusion hunger is affecting millions of people everywhere despite what country you live in. In order for us to combat this problem is to start where people are most affected and help them develop ways and provide them the resources necessary to fight this hunger battle. There are plenty of local and worldwide charities that people can donate to help fight this battle against hunger. In America alone, there are twenty-five organizations dedicated to conquering world hunger, imagine how many others are out there that we can all come together and pull the necessary resources and money to defeat hunger once and for all.
