A Day In The Life Of A Prestige Academy Student

When wanting to enroll for a course at Prestige Academy you might be taking the student life into account and that is why we interviewed three Prestige Academy students who left no stone unturned in finding a private higher institution that offers an unforgettable student life. Johnieka Holtzhousen is a first-year student from Namibia. She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Marketing.

Q: "What is your daily routine when coming to Prestige Academy?"A: "From the very moment I walk through the doors I am greeted by friendly staff at reception and it is so awesome to see these friendly faces day in and day out. It is almost like seeing your family every day. Of course, I have to get my daily caffeine fix so I always make my way downstairs where I buy a super amazing cup of coffee to get pumped for the day ahead. "

Q: "What are some of the most memorable social events that you participated in?"A: "Get ready to update your social calendar because there are tons of social events that keep student life interesting. Earlier this year we chose teams who participated in the Potjiekos competition – and I love making food – so it was a lot of fun even though this time around I was more of a cheerleader than a participator. I did, however, participate in the Zumba night and that was especially fun since we were a bunch of girls dancing together with the help of a professional choreographer. We could just let go of the stress and there were some really great prizes up for grabs. There were even a raffle and motivational cupcakes. This year we painted our bodies with neon paint and wore neon outfits. "

Q: "Do the hostel students go through an induction process as well?"

A: "I have friends who are in the hostels. They do go through an induction and it sounds like a lot of fun. They get to really know each other during that time just like we do on campus. They would, for instance, paint their own cups according to the house they live in. They also have their own war cry and movie nights. "

Q: "Are there any sports events at Prestige Academy?"

A: "We had such fun and a few laughs when students participated in a competition where they had to build model cars from recycled material. The students would race off and some of the cars would even fall apart on spot and would be fixed right there and then, but they finished the race. We attended a day called the CAPA Series. This is where teams played soccer and netball, there were food trucks and music – it was intense. There were also prizes up for grabs. We definitely felt the team spirit. "

Q: "What about making friends on campus?"

A: "Well, it might seem like a bit scary or awkward to meet new people at first but I just sat down next to someone and started making conversation and next thing I knew we were almost like best friends. We get to do group assignments in class which really helps you to get to know each other. But when you attend a first-year camp you get to meet a lot of new people. "Nicholas Erasmus is a first-year student from Cape Town studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Marketing.

Q: "Most Grade 12 learners who go to university often worry about what to wear as a student. What was this experience like for you when you started studying?"A: "It is so funny! For the first week or so everyone came to campus wearing what we call their "good clothes". Everyone looked fancy and showed off their sense of style. But over time we got used to each other and now we are more laid back and some are even rocking their sweatpants.

Q: "Which student event did you like most recently?"

A: "We had a Shavathon in aid of cancer awareness. There were different color spray cans and we sprayed our hair. But this is just one of many events that you can attend as a student at Prestige Academy. "

Q: "Is there a variety of personality types on campus?"

A: "O yes! Some people are cheerful, others are funny, and some are not morning people but gets better as the day goes by. We have a wide variety of personalities. Nobody is the same and this makes student life interesting. You meet all sorts of people, but everyone is friendly. "

Q: "What are some of the lessons you've learned this year?"

A: "Be yourself 100% of the time! Know your friends and study hard – play later because it can get hectic at times with assignments and projects that need to be handed in on time. Students must not forget to enjoy every single day and have no regrets. If you are passionate about what you are studying you will really enjoy your time. "

Q: "How would you describe the lecturers?"

A: "Each lecturer is different. Some are systematic and others are freer in their teaching method. You never feel that anyone of them reads the work of a page. The courses are very practical. The lecturers also have a great sense of humor. "

Q: "As a student studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Digital Marketing what would you say is the role of social media on campus?"

A: "Social Media is very dominant and is a great way of letting students know what is happening on campus. Most students update their WhatsApp statuses with pictures taken on campus or quotes they heard in class. We all know with social media being so popular amongst students – get ready to get tagged!

Q: "What about getting exercise when studying?"

A: "The Student Representative Council's Sports Portfolio organizes a massive hike which is a lot of fun and the feedback is extremely positive. Students can relax and enjoy nature!

Q: "Can you elaborate on what the Fallen Angles Project was and also explain what "Huisfondsdans" is?"

A: "Earlier this year we did some community outreach work for the Fallen Angles Charity. They rescue dogs and cats and we donated food and leashes and took the dogs for a walk. The Huisfondsdans was pretty awesome. Students paired up and dressed according to themes. There were DJ's, music, food, and prizes. It is a less formal dance then the annual spring ball. Erin Steyn from Durbanville (Cape Town) is a first-year student studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Event Management.

Q: "How would you describe the feeling you get when you arrive at the campus?"

A: "There is definitely a student vibe. When I park my car I see students listening to music and socializing in groups. Some are intermingling and others are carrying projects. You can immediately see that it is a stress-free environment and people have a positive attitude.

Q: "How do you get your head in the game when you are on campus?"

A: "The Resource Center on campus is a great place to get focused and do research. But this is also a place where you see familiar faces and where everyone is working towards a common goal. People also study in small groups and help each other. In class, you will never feel neglected as it is an inclusive environment. There is always a student buzz – even when doing group assignments. You are also not just a student number. You have an identity. "

Q: "What are some tips you'd like to give a prospective first-year student?"

A: "The main focus should always be your course and your marks as you are coming on campus to achieve a qualification. Student life plays a massive role and it is not just made up of social events. But don't take yourself too seriously. Enjoy being a part of a student culture. Also, never get rid of your matric farewell dress or tuxedo – you'll need that for the Spring Ball.

Q: "What stands out for you about student life at Prestige Academy?"

A: "What you learn here is the beginning steps for what happens after being a student. You are preparing here for "real life". The lecturers are experts in their fields and you are learning from those experts. Also, you can make life-long friends here.
