A Research Of Successful Entrepreneur James Dyson

The entrepreneur I have selected to research is James Dyson, he is the wealthiest engineer in the UK. This is due to all of his hard work and effort that he puts into his inventions and ideas. During his early years Sir James Dyson attended three schools that would later influence his future as an entrepreneur ‘Gresham’s School’ 1956-1965 ‘Byam Shaw School of Art’ 1965-1966 and the ‘Royal College of Art’ 1966-1970. Sir James Dyson opened a University on Dyson's Wiltshire Campus in September 2017.

During his time at the college Mr Dyson spent 14 years and a year after graduating attempting to create a model that worked but ended up making roughly 5, 000 versions of his new technology until he finally constructed one that worked the way he wanted it. The advanced companies are busy creating our future, they are entirely reliant on highly skilled minds to get us there. To continue we need to show people the engineering shortage which is threatening science, technology and engineering as less and less people are able to learn engineering as education is lacking and more and more jobs are requiring the need for engineering specialities. Companies are experimenting, investing and developing to create the next generation of artificial intelligence, robotics. “Education needs to change our institutions are dropping many graduates with impractical degrees; 65% of children entering primary school today will end up working in roles that don't yet exist”.

The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology opened its doors in September 2017. I have employed 33 of the brightest young minds in this country to work and study full-time at Dyson. These bright and ambitious undergraduate engineers will work towards a Russell-Group engineering degree and gain real-world experience working on live projects. James Dyson has one student who has built a moving, responsive flight simulator at her school with the help of the Dysons institute of education. James Dyson helped another who already runs his own business designing and manufacturing camping equipment. With aid from education by the Dyson’s institute of education.

Attitudes

James Dyson had formed an attitude that allowed him to continue working and trying even when he failed because of his perseverance and his work ethic. It allowed him to persevere at every moment for him to reflect on his mistakes and evaluate his decisions. James Dyson is a firm believer that failure is a crucial part of his success. James works hard when I'm at work. When James Dyson got home he try to get 10 hours of sleep. James Dyson said that he “liked living on the edge…I liked the danger”.

In 1978 Dyson, becoming tired with clogged air filters, so he built a cyclone collector similar larger industrial plant. Adapting this solution to home vacuum cleaners. He earned his wealth through creating the Dual Cyclone and Dyson Ball vacuum cleaners most commonly. “I’ve had my head down for the past 40 years, concentrating on the manufacture of technology that I’ve engineered and designed. “I’m lucky to be working with a truly inspirational group of people and to have spent my days doing something so fulfilling. The only way Sir James Dyson got into the British stores trade was in 1995, when the former British foreign secretary, Lord Howe, asked if there were any problems. Dyson got a call from the purchasing director within a year, and Dyson was the best-selling vacuum cleaner manufacturer in Britain. According to the Sunday times rich list (2017), Sir James Dyson has a net worth of £7. 8 Billion GBP labelling him as one of the wealthiest engineers in the world.

James Dyson paid £50m of taxes to the British National Treasury. In low-growth UK, Dyson has been investing £45m a year in research and development, investing in new technologies. James Dyson encouraged sales to rise more than 15%. And 30% rise in expenses to £315m, pre-tax profits were 21% higher at £198m. Dyson’s company hires hundreds of employees every year. Sir James Dyson loved the peace and independence of owning 100% of the business shares. Only having to think about the products and he didn’t have to think about shareholders. This meant that Dyson’s business was completely free, and he became obsessed of five years of doing nothing but making and testing prototypes. "If only we had more Dysons" is what most senior politicians over the past decade or so would say due to James’ contribution to UK’s economy - but especially since the great crash of 2007-2008, when the risks of the UK's dependence on banking and financial services to deliver economic growth.

Sir James Dyson didn't enjoy being a CEO of a company that much. He never really had been a businessman, giving him a new environment to work in as the new role he had taken was higher up with more work and planning to do. James wanted to carry on the designing and engineering his work all by himself because that's what he loved doing as a job.

What Has Dyson Done?

Dyson opened a factory and within two years his Dual Cyclone model became the top-selling vacuum cleaner in Britain, despite a retail price considerably higher than other brands. Dyson’s appliances won many design awards around the world. The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology opened its doors in September 2017. In 2002 the James Dyson Foundation was made with the aim to encouraging young people to enter engineering.

He worked for the next five years before he produced a compatible model that swirled incoming dirty air around a cylindrical container, traditional bag-type vacuum cleaners showed no interest in Dyson’s device, arousing in him a lasting antipathy towards his conventional businesses. He sold the G-Force, to a company in Japan, where it became a success and won a design prize in 1991.

Sir James Dyson, British inventor, and entrepreneur successfully manufactured household appliances and became an engineering and technical innovator to British society. In 1970 he worked for Rotork Controls Ltd. Where they designed and produced the Sea Truck for use by military or civilian customers. In 1974 Dyson founded his own company. James Dyson has found a new approach to engineering education that will can attract a new kind of engineer as around 1/3rd of engineers are women. In an industry where only 9% of UK engineers are female, and he hopes this balance will be further improved.

The Dyson School at Imperial College London, helped shape the curriculum, as in 2017 more women were accepted compared to men. Dyson has filed almost 9, 000 patents to date, more than any UK university technology transfer office.

Rivals & Risks

Vax was founded in 1977 by a British entrepreneur, Alan Brazier. When he realised that there was carpet cleaning equipment available he started to innovate his ideas into inventions that would shape the future of vacuum cleaners.

Vex and Dyson are rival companies that both want to conquer the world of vacuum cleaners. In 1995 Vax was available to purchase in almost 50 unique countries around the world, and by 1999 Vax was finally part of the TTI group. TTI, was founded by Paul Andrews in 1971 is a distributor of electronic components like capacitors, resistors, connectors, switches, relays, circuit protection, electromagnetics, discrete semiconductors, sensors, RF modules, antennas, and more.

A risk Dyson had to make was to go ahead and compete with Vax, the risk was taken and ended up with the Dyson Company with the upper hand as he gained more popularity leading to more sales increasing his overall Net Worth James Dyson’s son, Jake Dyson, presented the company’s latest model of vacuum cleaners in Paris, France. Since then profits have skyrocketed e. g. on 5th march 2018 the Dyson v10, launched as an upgraded version of the previous v8 with a more powerful motor. This was a risk as releasing a new vacuum cleaner so close to the previous model as the newer model could not be sold to the extent as which the development cost, which could be a major flaw in Dyson’s profits. The threat was progressed and was golden, the company gained over $2. 5 billion overnight and gave the company an even superior advantage over the rival vacuum cleaner seller Vax.

The DC06 was a huge fail in the dyson’s history of selling vacuums as the product was never sold to anyone. The product was a robotic vacuum cleaner that utilised sensors equipped with the Dyson Digital Motor, as cost and weight needed reducing the product failed and lost the company heaps of money. It had the ability to 'learn' the room, and to distinguish between solid objects, such as walls and furniture, and human beings, pets, which was ahead of the vacuum cleaner time, by utilising sensors and specially-written navigation software. Dyson DC06 got introduced in 2005 and failed miserably.
