Achieving Academic Skills - an Important Part of Successful College Life
College life is known as a starting point in real life, it is where the students usually start to build their academic skills or somehow enhances and increase the skills they had during their lower year/s. The adjustment period from Highschool to College is one of the tricky parts of being a student. From meeting new faces and professors, dealing with new schedules, going to different places, and many more.
College life presents heaps of difficulties before you, that is why developing college academic skills is important. Way back in my Senior Highschool days, one of my teachers always tells the class that we need to be a critical thinker for us to make our decisions quick and right. Another thing is that our teachers trained our time management by giving us a bulk of homework, quizzes, and other school-related stuff and since I was young then I thought that our teacher is just torturing us, without knowing that it would greatly help the study habit that I have. Applying those pieces of advice from my former teacher helps me now to easily understand and criticize things and manage my time wisely especially during the final’s week wherein, almost all of the subjects are loaded with a school task.
Now that I am a 1st year BS Medical Technology student, I want to develop new academic skills that will surely help me with my profession and increase the skills that I already have. First and foremost, I want to develop my public speaking skills and communication skills, because I want to boost up my confidence and conquer my fear in talking to the front of many people. I genuinely believe that it is one of the most essential skill to have, especially with my course that is inline in medical field that requires a lot of communication. In my own perspective a doctor with excellent public speaking skills will always be in demand so that practicing it is worth learning. On the other hand, or based from the stories of other college graduates/students, college life is full of organizations and there are different classmates in every other subjects so that communication is needed, furthermore I believe that communication can help each and every one of us in expanding and sharing our knowledge to others.
The next thing that I want to improve is my writing skills, I believe that writing skills is one of the big factors in learning it always connected to the public speaking or communication skills of a person. In relation with that student’s life consists of many readings and writings, like research papers, essays, and many more, practicing a good writing technique can be a big help to improve my skills and to prepare myself for my future profession. Knowing that I am planning to proceed to medicine proper, there is a lot of paper works so that I need to improve my writing skills as early as possible. 'Writing makes people better doctors because it increases their ability to be good observers.'
To summarize, College life is a quite different from Highschool life, it requires a lot patience, hard-work, and perseverance to achieve our dream. And before achieving that we should always prioritize the academic skills that we are lack off, for us to improve it as soon as possible and to continue improving the skills that we already have. Academic skills are something that can really help us to survive our college life it will help us to grow, be more confident, and be an efficient learner.
