Introduction
Today, the efficiency and effectiveness of many organizations have demonstrated a rapid drop in their performance and productivity. This is the effects of alcohol abuse and addiction which not only affects the personal life of an individual but also extends to negatively impact his/her duties, roles and responsibilities.
Alcohol abuse and addiction have become a major illness in the work environment. It has debilitated employees and proved costly to employers. Therefore, it’s important to identify those people suffering negatively from alcohol addiction, and implement programs as a defense against alcohol abuse. The Alcoholics Anonymous meeting sought to help those people suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction overcome the vice and moderate their drinking habits. This was geared towards helping alcoholics students and employees maintain their academic performance in school, as well as work performance respectively.
Findings
It was found that a higher percentage of the population suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction was as a result of family history and environment. Most people attributed their alcoholism behavior to their alcoholic’s parents and relatives and spending time with people who drink heavily making them vulnerable and aggravating their risk of alcoholism.
As well, the findings indicated that mental health complications such as anxiety and depression played a major role in their drinking habits. Many sought refuge to drinking so as to temporarily ease those feelings. Finally, further demographics indicated that alcohol abuse and addiction was as a result of drinking at an early age. This lead to the increase of tolerance levels of alcohol in their bodies, as well as developed physical dependence on alcohol.
Conclusion
From the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, several conclusions concerning the effects, as well as the causes of alcohol abuse and addiction can be drawn. The findings of the meeting indicated that family history, early drinking age and health complications such as anxiety and depression are the major predisposing factors of alcohol abuse. In addition, it can be further concluded that excessive consumption of alcohol affects negatively the work performance of employees and the academic performance of students in school. Nonetheless, it's important to note that many alcoholics have understood the importance of managing their drinking habits in workplaces because of a wide variety of programs now offered at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
