Advanced Technology - A Cause Of Changes In Modern Society
Our society is changing at a rapid pace, compared to anytime in history. So what has caused this rapid change in our culture and is it all good for society? Advanced Technology can be considered the main contributing factor for our rapid changing society. In the past our ancestors did all work in their lives by manual labor. We now have advanced machines and computerized equipment to do these tasks. Technology has changed our society and lives in thousands of ways that most people don't even realize compared to past generations. Advanced technology can be found in every part of our lives and society it would be impossible to describe them all but lets focus on some of the most important technologies we have today. Some examples are found in our medicine, food supply, communications, transportation and the way we entertain ourselves are among a few examples of the way technology has advanced our lives.
Today the medical field is so advanced that people are living longer than they ever have in the past. We now have medicines and advanced diagnostic equipment that make our lives more comfortable to live. One example can be shown in respect to the advancement of surgical procedures and equipment utilized by the surgeons. In the past when an athlete had a serious knee injury like a torn ligament they had to usually have career ending surgery and the surgery to repair the damage was extremely difficult and lengthy with extremely long recovery times. Arthroscopic surgery is todays new medical advancement allowing the same knee surgery to be done in less time and repairing the damage so the athlete can continue their career and have a speedy recovery. The medical field also has so many new medicines and other new medical equipment that make diagnosis and recovery of aliments faster than ever before.
The history of the food supply has changed greatly by the use of technology. Past generations had very few grocery stores and had to rely on their own ability to grow food with very little equipment doing most of the work by hand. Nowadays most of our food that we consume is grown on giant farms using advanced machines, advanced genetic growing procedures to maximize output. Examples of this can be seen by looking at old farms with their primitive farming equipment. Todays farms are high tech commercial businesses using computerized equipment and advanced growing science to grow food for our population. The pony express was the first mail delivery service in the United States operating alongside the telegraph. These were the main two forms of communication used in the early to mid 1800's.
In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone a new device that allowed people to talk and listen to another person across great distances this invention was considered magical at the time. The telephone still remains one of the best forms of communication used today however it has changed drastically from the early days. Fast forward 142 years into todays society the telephone is now called a cell phone and almost everyone has one. The cell phone is more than merely a communication device used to talk and listen it can be used for emails, texting and listening to music as well as streaming the internet and taking pictures and much more. Walking was early man's first form of transportation somewhere along the line we started using horses to get around. This was still a slow form of transportation land locking early people from continent to continent and isolating many people in the world.
Water ways gave way to boats which was far more efficient than walking or riding horseback. Boats also allowed people to travel across the oceans connecting continents and allowing people to experience other cultures. Eventually trains then cars and then airplanes all were developed as new forms of travel. Are advancements in forms of transportation has made the world small and allows societies to connect whereas early man's transportation was used out of necessity. Nothing shapes a society more than its forms of entertainment. People entertain themselves in all different ways from social gatherings to individual conversations. No one person laughs or has fun the same way as other people but an early man's feeling of having fun is no different than a person of today feeling of having fun. Some forms of early entertainment were cave drawings then we went to paintings and eventually to pictures then to movies then television and now computer and our personal phones.
There are now thousands of different types and forms of entertainment available. Our society is constantly changing and the old cliché necessity is the mother of invention can be considered the engine that drives this change. Advancing technology has connected everyone everywhere in the world and some day possibly everything in the universe. However with all this change some things should be considered the negative impact that it has caused on the environment and mans true nature. Early man lived its day sun up to sun down and had very little negative impact on its environment. Today we live in a 24 hour world and the machines that we have developed for our creature comforts have a heavy cost on our environment pollution is everywhere. Change is good but we as a global society need to control this change responsibly so we can give future generations a better world to live in.
