Analysis Of A Child’S Physical, Intellectual, Social, And Emotional Development

The purpose of this study is to see a child’s physical, intellectual, social, and emotional skills to perceive if they are where they need to be with their development; as optimizing now will ensure their future success. I decided on studying Video # 2 this contains a spunky dirty blonde hair, brown eyed, two-year-old girl named Mia.

Physical Development brings significant changes during infancy to age two such as physical health, proportions, body size, appearance, body system functions, perceptual and motor capacities. During ages 2-3 years children should be able to walk more rhythmically, push with their feet, jump, hop, throw, and catch with rigid upper body. In this study Mia was able to run and turn corners with controlled speed and direction, as well as walk forward and backwards and stand on her tippy toes while balancing. Mia seemed to use her right hand as her dominant when using her fine motor skills, she was able to unscrew the lid, put large beads on a string, pick up and kick her ball, hit the peg board with her hammer, and can hold her crayon with control. When Mia shows us her art skills she seemed to enjoy drawing what her mom would tell her to draw and have a type of satisfaction is being praised by mom.

Intellectual Development during the first two years is known as the sensorimotor period, this is when little ones learns through their actions and senses. Moving on to preoperational period at age 2-7 years a child will think in their own activities and what is then perceived. Next is concrete operations during ages 7-11 years old when children best learn through logical thinking and experience. Finally, we have formal operations from 11 years to adulthood, this is when people are more capable of abstract thinking. In Mia’s development she can recognize basic shapes by inserting the shape cut-out into the proper placement, she located object from both behind and beside other objects and remembers actions/directions of actives by listening to her mother. By studying her language spoken Mia is a very chatty two-year-old, she talks most of the video while using two-word sentences such as “Mom draw”, she can say the names of her favorite animals, people, and toys. Mia was also able to draw what mom told her to which shows great intellectual development.

Social development is a very important piece in development, it is the child’s ability to interact with others such as other children and adults. Mia excels at making eye contact with her mom and the individual behind the camera filming, she has no problem deciding what to for activities on her own, she seemed confident and enthusiastic in what she was doing especially the drawing and beading, and she stood up for her rights when getting mom to do certain activities with her. Mia’s social skills showed the joy of autonomous play with her doll and ball, playing parallel to her mom, sharing with her mom to have her join in on her activities without fuss, modeled wonderful behavior, expressed her feelings appropriately, and showed appropriate skills used in activities. When Mia played with the doll she showed it love by hugging it, dressing it, and taking it for walks which is a great way to develop social skills.

Emotional development begins in infancy and continues in adulthood, this is when one begins to appreciate that others emotional reactions may differ from their own, has vocabulary for emotions, and displays empathy. The most recognizable emotions are joy, sadness, anger, and fear. As they continue to grow children develop an ability to recognize feelings. Mia shows no withdrawal from other’s, and seems very happy, she shows interest in all her activities except the building blocks when she wants her mom to do it for her. Mia seems to be very affectionate which is very easy to see when she is caring for her little doll with enjoyment.
