Analysis of the Links Between La Parure and Mon Oncle Jules

Reading the two short stories, La Parure and Mon Oncle Jules by Guy de Maupassant, we are shown how his style of writing connects to the struggles with which both stories interact. The way he uses the similarities in both can make us a lot of relationships between his two pieces. Both of them talk about wanting to be pushed back from being rich or limited money, but want to be known as wealthy families and associate with the rich. Social class is a very similarity and a theme that we see everywhere in the stories and how they want to mix with others. To add another link between the two is the pride and how their pride got the better of them. No matter how hard a situation can happen, whether you have money or not, if you do not have a lot of pride in yourself, it's important that you persevere to get what you want.

In La Parure, Mathilde Loisel is a woman who cares a lot about her appearance in society, but is not rich herself. She lives a very weak life, but is perceived in society as rich because the way she dresses. She is haunted by being rich and makes it her goal to find the most beautiful dress, dear to the party to which her husband is invited. His friend Madame Forestier lends him a river of diamonds and Mathilde sees this object as a way of adjusting with society. This shows that Mathilde perceives her life to be full of wealth but in reality she has a very sad life that she can not escape. Compared to this, the Davranche family in My Uncle Jules, we see them as a poor family who relied on a letter that the uncle sent to them saying that he would pay them back for all the money he had to. They had to make their own clothes, only went out on Sunday to show off the girls, in the hope that they would get married and they eaten oysters as a sign of wealth. They knew they were poor but they wanted to hide it from all the others because they wanted to be important and they really cared about their appearance in society. The two characters of each story know that they are poor, yet they try to hide it to go with social classes and can call themselves rich because they do not like their lives and hope to change. The only difference is the result at the end, Loisel was unhappy and lost all their money and wasted their lives and advanced Davranche with their lives as soon as they realized there was no money coming from Uncle Jules. To conclude, we can now see the difference between the two families and how they persevered through their struggles and the result they got by their attitudes and how they handled their money situations. They also wanted to seem like they were doing good but in reality they were upset with the results.

Secondly, another similarity between the two is the pride they have possessed for them. Meaning that in the story of My Uncle Jules, the family was very proud of the letter that the uncle sent because it meant that they were not going to be poor and they would be reimbursed for all the money that 'they gave. They also went out every Sunday as a family to show off their daughters in the hope they would get married. They were proud to be able to eat oysters which were a sign that they were just their overall happiness and rich as a family was enough to hide it they were really struggling with money. As well as in the story La Parure, Madame Loisel was a very proud woman in other aspects than her money. She wore beautiful dresses and she had enough money to go in with her friends. Her husband was invited to a ball and gave his money that he was saving up a gun for her to buy a beautiful new dress for the ball. She was proud to be able to have money while she was not so proud of her financial standings after she had to pay back all the money she borrowed to pay for the necklace.

Finally, there is a very big difference between the two stories and that's how they manipulated their situations. What this means is that in the story of La Parure, Madame Loisel wanted to repay her rich friend and tried forever to get all the money she thought she had to. After she lost the necklace, had to borrow money and he took ten years to repay the person to whom she borrowed. She had to completely change her lifestyle, move to a smaller place and a cook and clean for her. She then told her friend later the truth that she lost the collie.
