Analysis Of The Phrase “It’s Opener There In The Wide Open Air”

A line in the book, Oh the Places You’ll Go! written by Dr. Seuss, that is meaningful to me is: “It’s opener there in the wide open air” (Dr. Suess). The accompanying illustration adds to my interpretations of the line. The illustration contains multiple bright paths that all connect, with a single person walking down the middle path and leaving a path of footprints behind them. You can interpret the idea of the paths differently, one may consider the path as a symbol of our brain, and another may envision the path as our life or future. In the illustration, the paths are in a grid pattern this could represent our brain making connections and growing. Until your, late 20’s your brain is still developing and expanding with knowledge. With every new piece of information, our brain is making a new path and connecting it to already exciting paths.

In contrast to the paths being a symbol of our brain, the paths could also display one's life, almost like a timeline. Where they have been and where they want to go? Each row could be a month and each column could a year. The person that is walking may be trying to recall what happened in past to help them plan for the future. The use of vibrant colour in the picture adds that the person has all fond memories. Also, the paths on the page go on forever, this demonstrates our future can constantly change depending on what happens in the present or what path we chose to follow. For example, in secondary school, we take certain courses that will allow us an opportunity to get into a specific university or college program that then determines what our job is going to be. But if we take different courses and get accepted into a different program our job may be different. In addition, bright colours in the picture show that the future is optimistic, the person is hopeful that the future will bring something positive. The serval paths give the kid options to chose what route the kid would like to follow or make. This could display how a kid can grow into different types of people depending on their environment, upbring, and genetics. In this example depending on which path the kid follows the kid may turn out completely differently.

There are two main types of people extroverted and introverted. Extroverted people are talkative and outgoing, while introverted people are more quiet and private. Even tho a person is either extroverted or introverted it does not mean they cannot develop the other personality. Instead of looking at the colour or what the path could represent, you may notice the page is very plain and open. This may show the reader there is an abundance of possibilities. It’s up to the reader to decide which opportunities they will take and which ones they will turn down. Open space is usually interpreted in two ways, fill an open space with colour and people you get possibilities, fill an open space with dark colour and winding paths you get the feeling of being lost or in danger. I think this line has a similar meaning to a famous Alexzander Graham Bell quote: “When one door closes another one opens” (Alexzander Graham Bell). Both can be seen as talking about the one's life journey. If a path ends pick another path or if a door closes pick another door. Both emphasize there are many options in life to chose from and you must pick which ones to take.
