American veteran actor and filmmaker Ed Harris is a living legend who has already left a legacy for future generations to follow. Harris is a multiple award-winning actor and has been nominated for the Oscars at least 4 times. Some of his notable films include; The Truman Show (1998), The Hours (2002), and Gone Baby Gone (2007). In the small screen, Harris has had notable roles in Empire Falls (2005), Game Change (2012), and Westworld which premiered in 2016.
Born on November 28, 1950, in Englewood, New Jersey, Edward Allen Harris grew up in a middle-class Presbyterian family. He was raised by his parents, Robert Harris and Margaret Harris (née Sholl) in Tenafly, New Jersey. Harris has two brothers named Paul and Robert. He got his artistic side from his father, Robert who was a singer and part of a band that included musician and TV personality, Fred Waring.
At the young age of 8, Harris got his first ever acting role which came in a made-for-television movie named The Third Miracle. However, that role wasn't the start of Harris' career as he went back to focus on his education.
He attended Tenafly High School where he played football and became his team's captain. In 1971, two years after his high school graduation, Harris relocated with his parents to New Mexico. By that time, Harris who had briefly attended Columbia University made up his mind to pursue a career in acting. He then enrolled at the University of Oklahoma where he studied drama. Harris found success playing in various local theaters and soon relocated to Los Angeles, California to attend the California Institute of the Arts. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Ed Harris immediately began his professional acting career starting out on the stage before dabbling into TV shows. After 5 years of paying his dues, He got his first major film role in 1980's Borderline. Three years later in 1983, he got his breakthrough portraying astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff. Despite being a box office bomb, Harris received critical acclaim which parlayed into a very successful career in a few years.
