Comprehensive Overview Of Oxfam Organization And Its Goals

Oxfam is an international non- governmental charitable organization focused on global poverty. Founded in 1942, the international organization is made up of 19 independent charities found all over the world working together to achieve one goal. Oxfam first started in Oxford, England where the original headquarters of Oxfam is located. Winnie Byanyima is the Oxfam international executive director who is involved worldwide in the company. Poverty is a massive issue around the world, an astonishing 3 billion people globally are trying to survive through the horrors of poverty. Oxfam works globally to find inventive ways to lift men and women from every part of the world out of poverty. Oxfam is determined to save people's lives and change the world drastically for the better. Oxfam campaigns to bring the voices of the poor to the public to insure their views are influential towards global decisions.

The name Oxfam comes from the Oxford committee for famine relief. The first committee campaigned for food supplies to be sent down to Greece to starving women and children during World War II. Oxfam grew rapidly through the years as people wanted to be a part of something inspiring. Oxfam is becoming a world leader in delivery emergency care to people around the world. Oxfam has a positive outlook on the years to come and the organization is a part of other campaigns such as the climate change movement, bettering education and health care, unfair trade rules and many more.

Oxfam's biggest concern is ending world poverty and with their achievements thus far, they are on the right track. Poverty is an adaptable concept, which varies from social, political, and economic elements. Extreme poverty is when you lack all three, meaning you do not have the basic necessity such as food, shelter, water and clothing on a daily basis. Poverty has grown rapidly over the years “Just in Canada, 1 in 7 ( or 4. 9 million) live in poverty. ”

Poverty has a huge impact worldwide which is why Oxfam has decided to tackle it. Oxfam has grown rapidly over the years and is now a fully functioning credible organization making small impacts daily to achieve one big end goal. Oxfam provides water, shelter, food, clothing for those in need all over the world. Oxfam makes a huge impact day after day and “has directly helped 11. 8 million people in the last year including helping 4, 100, 000 people access clean water”. Knowing the severity of poverty and the effect is has on our world today, Oxfam is taking the steps they need to end Global poverty for good.

When national disasters strike such as a flood, hurricane, tornado and fires, Oxfam is ready to help. Providing clean water, food, clothing, aid and shelter for those who have been left with nothing “Millions of people are affected by natural disasters every year, and their impact can be calamitous. From the destruction of buildings to the spread of disease, natural disasters can devastate entire countries overnight. Tsunamis, earthquakes and typhoons do not just wreak havoc on land; they also disrupt people's lives in both densely populated cities and remote villages. ”

With the help from donations the Oxfam organization helps communities rebuild their livelihoods and prepare families to move forward in a positive light. At any given time Oxfam is responding to an average of 25 emergencies worldwide. Oxfam's takes on large global issues that are negatively affecting people's lives such as being poor, discriminated against and unequal access to survival needs such as food and water. Oxfam's organization is spread out all over the world. With their local partners, Oxfam is in more than 90 countries including Afghanistan, Chad, Mexico, Fiji, Nepal, Guatemala, Brazil and many more. Oxfam's headquarters are located in Oxford England, but have international offices in Addis Ababa, Brussels, Geneva, Moscow, New York, Oxford and Washington. Women form the majority of lives in poverty “Gender inequality is a key driver of poverty. And a fundamental denial of women's rights”.

Oxfam works towards helping women and their rights as women around the world have less power, influence and also further there inequality due to their class, ethnicity, religion or age. Oxfam is focusing on transforming power and gender relations and the stereotypical views to put an end to it all. Oxfam works to sustain improvements in women rights as it will help end poverty not just for women and young girls but for others to. Oxfam teams up with global ambassadors that campaign around the world to bring Oxfam to the public's attention. The ambassadors such as Coldplay, Annie Lennox, Helena Christensen, Bill Nighy and many more use their platform to push forward the fight against poverty and injustice. The ambassadors help bring awareness to “climate change to conflict resolution, from women's issues to an international arms trade treaty”. They are as involved as they can be and committed to making a difference.

Oxfam's purpose is to help create long lasting result to put a final end to poverty. Oxfam is a huge part of the global movement for change, empowering people from all backgrounds to make their own future that is right for them. Oxfam continues to grow and make changes for the better.
