Founded in 1942, the international organization is made up of 19 independent charities found all over the world working together to achieve one goal. Oxfam first started in Oxford, England where the original headquarters of Oxfam is located. Winnie Byanyima is the Oxfam international executive director who is involved worldwide in the company. The name Oxfam comes from the Oxford committee for famine relief. The first committee campaigned for food supplies to be sent down to Greece to starving women and children during World War II. Oxfam grew rapidly through the years as people wanted to be a part of something inspiring. Oxfam is becoming a world leader in delivery emergency care to people around the world. Oxfam has a positive outlook on the years to come and the organization is a part of other campaigns such as the climate change movement, bettering education and health care, unfair trade rules and many more.
Oxfam's biggest concern is ending world poverty and with their achievements thus far, they are on the right track. Poverty is an adaptable concept, which varies from social, political, and economic elements. Extreme poverty is when you lack all three, meaning you do not have the basic necessity such as food, shelter, water and clothing on a daily basis.
