The Death Penalty Debate: Weighing the Pros and Cons
I chose the field of Law because I am interested in it. Law is my main topic because you can research many different things that have to do with our everyday lives. This is death penalty pros and cons essay in which I will briefly reveal this topic.
To start with, the death penalty is a very controversial topic. This topic is very controversial because it involves life or death. Depending on how you may look at it, the death penalty can be a very good or bad thing. If you are pro-life, then it is a very bad thing in your eyes. For me, I believe we should keep the death penalty just because I believe it is the ultimate punishment for doing something very awful.
The pros of the death penalty are: “costs the government less as opposed to life in prison without parole, it deters would-be criminals to commit felonies, the absence of the death penalty is synonymous to crime rate increase, it’s constitutional and doesn’t violate the Eighth Amendment, and the death penalty is a just punishment for crimes committed against the rights to life, freedom and safety of victims.”
While the pros seem good, the cons are: “innocent people are wrongly executed, some criminals are suffering from mental illness, it’s an added cost to the government and taxpayers’ money, the death penalty is a form of revenge, and lastly it is a platform that is anti-poor and discriminatory”. Although there are many positives and negatives, it isn’t up to me to decide what to do with the death penalty.
An audience that would benefit from this topic could be the families of victims whose murderers could be killed by the death penalty. They would benefit because the murderer would be brought to justice. A place in Lexington that I could visit could be the Catholic Diocese in Lexington. According to their website, they give information on what is happening with the Death Penalty.
In conclusion, I chose Law because of the countless options that I could have chosen. From my essay, I narrowed down as best as I could maybe one of the most controversial topics - death penalty.
