Defining the Problem and Finding Solutions to Hunger Malnutrition

Hunger malnutrition is one of the huge social issue that is being faced by millions of people all around the world, as a result leading to the stunted growth in human development. This has always been one of the major social development goals of the immense organizations around the globe to accomplish in order to reduce hunger malnutrition and gain a rise in the growth of human development. This is one of the essays on hunger in whoch the problem amd its solution is analysed. 

Hunger is described from multiple points of view. It incorporates singular sensations and family social reactions, food shortage (genuine or dreaded) and public food asset reports that attention on supply of energy (kilocalories) in any country corresponding to a base limit of need whereas  Malnutrition is a comprehensive term that addresses all indications of helpless nourishment. It can mean any or all types of under nutrition, overweight, and obesity. In another study it depicts that hunger exists when people do not have a sufficient intake of calories and nutrients. It also talks about the term hidden hunger which occurs due to the insufficient intake of micronutrients like vitamin A.

In order to achieve this social development goal, United Nations is known for best in working for this regard and many other social issues coming across. Due to the current pandemic there has been a dramatic increase in worsening the hunger and malnutrition social issue as people are starving and fighting for their lives. The hunger and malnutrition is a very sensitive social issue nowadays as it can significantly affect a human body by causing critical health issues. It occurs where people are unable to obtain sufficient food over a longer period of time and do not get enough nutrients leading to severe malnutrition. Most of the people facing poverty get into greater risk of hunger and malnutrition. It has a significant impact on people of every age and time. Therefore, harming both the mind and body with the major symptoms of poor immune system, dizziness, stunted growth, muscle weaknesses and other organ function problems.

United Nations work for this major social issue with its World Food Programme (WFP) that aims to achieve its social development goals where it aims to end hunger and improve nutrition by achieving greater food security and promote sustainable agriculture. According to the estimates its reports depicts that around 690 million people are suffering from hunger and malnutrition which makes around 8.9% of the world's population. Within that count around, 381 million people suffering from hunger belong to Asia, 250 million from Africa thus showing the increase in the number of people all around the world. It indicates how around 750 million people are facing severe food insecurity and around 2 billion people did not have access to sufficient nutritious food in 2019.According to the information and the recent trends it is analyzed that the quantity of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition may reach to 840 million by 2030.

In addition, though the people like farmers, fisherman and herders are the ones providing with the 70% of the food, still they face food insecurity. Hunger and malnutrition is widely seen in the rural areas. It is estimated that around 14 million children that are under the age of five suffer from intense malnutrition around the globe.

This major social issue does not only affect the individuals but also the unequal distribution of hunger and malnutrition impacts the political, social and economic power. In this manner, the initial phase in handling the imbalances of appetite is to see how they are implanted in and amplified by the disparities of force at work in the food framework. It is difficult to figure out power relations.

As both the hunger and malnutrition work together and are linked to each other affecting the individuals biological processes. There could be many reasons of people facing this social issue as there is unequal distribution of income and resources therefore indicating the diminishing value of welfare which shows the improved nutritional status and better standard of living.

Another major term for the severe hunger conditions is referred as the “famine”. Where the study shows that around 70 million people died due to the famine during the 20th century. That occurred as a result of political mismanagement, environmental shocks including drought and other conflicts and crisis. The major countries struggling according to the research shows Nigeria, Yemen, South Sudan and Somalia, where around 20 million people are facing famine risking the lives of most of the children, thus becoming the major cause of mortality.

According to the research of the World food programme depicted that the current pandemic, climatic conditions, economic downfall and the manmade conflicts have contributed to this social issue immensely as 135 million people are suffering from acute hunger. Which is further doubled as a result of covid-19 by putting an additional 139 million people in that state by the end of 2020.Therefore, a huge change in the global food and agricultural system needs to be implemented in order to nourish around more than 600 million people who are facing severe hunger and malnutrition. It depicts that 43% of Pakistan's population faces hunger and malnutrition from which 18% faces sufficient access of food as these people heavily dependent on agriculture for their living.

Moving on, talking about Pakistan in terms of this intense social issue of hunger and malnutrition, Pakistan has been a victim of this due to its natural disaster and political and economic instability so it has one of the most poorest regions that suffers from severe malnutrition hic is Tharparkar region in Sindh which is desert land. In Pakistan around 20% of the population is suffering from hunger and malnutrition which estimates around 40 million people. The poverty and food insecurity is immense in Pakistan that further raised due to the natural disasters of 2019 and now the covid-19 further raised its percentage. Around 40% of people live in multi-dimensional poverty and 38% of the children under the age of five in Pakistan are facing the stunted growth due to severe malnutrition. Though, Pakistan do have sufficient food but due to the unequal distribution of resources and because most of the food is exported which causes the lack of food availability for the locals.
