Difference In Temperature Comparing Two Types Of Insulator

Abstract

The issue was about the best material comparing different kinds of insulator. This research aims to know the difference of the both materials in terms of insulating, which are the P. E foam insulator and the bubble wrap type of insulator. This research also aims to have the knowledge in which of the two different insulator is better at insulating. A research was conducted specifically an experimental type at Deca homes Mintal, Davao city for half a day, and every hour of the half day a record of the temperature on both insulators are taken. The result was the bubble type of insulator reduces more heat than the P. E foam insulator. The result was not what the researcher expected, for the researcher expected it to be equal. After the result and the conclusion was made which was the bubble wrap type of inulating material reduces more heat than the P. E foam insulator. Recommendations for the research is to research further about other methods or material in keeping the room environment at a cool temperature or keeping it in a measure of thermal comfort.

Introduction

Heat is one of the major cause and reason that we are prudent in planning our home, specially those who are living in a place where the sun is direct and frequently present. Most of our houses here in the Philippines are mindful about indoor temperature, for the reason that we are living in the tropics. There are four (4 ) types of weather the tropics have, but this research focuses only on the part where heat takes place and can affect the temperature of a room. Temperature of the room plays a fundamental part as a characteristics of an ideal environment for a room. Ideal room temperature is also identified as thermal comfort. (Szokolay, 2008) Thermal comfort is identified as the satisfaction of the person with his desired environment. (Maslow, 1984) There are many factors that can affect thermal comfort of a room, one of it is the canopy of the house or in simple terms the roof.

In creating a building the roof plays a significant role in protecting the occupants from the sun’s radiation, for it is the main receiver of the direct heat from the sun. As the roof covers the room from the direct rays of the sun there is still a heat transfer coming from the roof that can affect the temperature of the room. Hagen, K. D. (1999) Here comes the use of insulators. Insulators are defined as a heat reducing material. Holman, J. P. (2002)

There are a lot of insulating materials that are present today including the P. E foam insulator and bubble wrap type of insulator. P. E foam insulator is made of polyethylene foam and is a great material for insulation (see figure 2). On the other hand bubble wrap insulator is another type of polyethylene insulator. There are two types of bubble wrap insulator the double bubble and the single bubble (see figure 1) which is being used in this research. The objective of this research is to know if there is a difference of the two types of insulator. This research also aims to acquire the knowledge of which of the two different insulator is better at insulating.

Research Question

How do the temperature differ if a G. I sheet is applied with reflective P. E foam insulator compare to bubble wrap insulator.

Hypotheses

Null hypothesis: P. E foam insulator = bubble wrap type insulator Alternate hypothesis: bubble wrap type insulator ≠ P. E foam insulator

Methodology

A comparative research using an experimental method administered through out the research and was conducted at Deca homes Mintal, Davao city. The experiment consists of two styrofoam boxes that is both covered with G. I sheet both applied with different types of insulator (see figure 3). Both of the styrofoam boxes is covered with G. I sheet while using a BUBBLE WRAP type as insulator and the other box uses P. E FOAM insulator. Every 1 hour both are checked for the measure of temperature and record is taken. Temperature is being measured using a room thermometer (see figure 4). The thermometer is put inside the boxes to measure the temperature. Finally, when the experiment is done both temperature recorded are compared and then the researcher will differentiate their measured temperature if the two types of insulator has a difference in reducing the transferred heat from the G. I. sheet.

Results And Discussion

The experiment was conducted on a two styrofoam box covered with the insulated sheet of galvanized iron. The difference was that the two boxes has different type of insulator, P. E foam insulator was used on the orange box while the blue box has bubble wrap type of insulator. As the research ended results came at present. Table 1 is the result of the research conducted. The results speaks that the P. E foam insulator and the bubble type of insulator have different insulating levels as to what the records and table say. Using T1 = temperature one (1) - T2 temperature two (2) and the answer will be = Co as formula. By using those methods the results came and having a 3Co as difference of the two temperature, the question was answered and the researcher’s aim was achieved.

Conclusion

The results have led the researcher to the conclusion of the difference in temperature of the two types of insulator. As seen on the graph (see graph 1. 1) and the table (see table 1) the result says that the bubble wrap type of insulator is better at reducing the heat transfer from the roof, while on the other hand the P. E foam insulator results on the contrary.

Recommendation

The point of the research was to discover and to gain knowledge of the two different insulator if the two different insulator have different level of insulation. This research scope only covers two types of insulating materials that may help the roof protect from the heat that can affect the room environment. The researcher suggests to research further about the other methods and materials that help reduce heat or keep the room temperature at a measure of thermal comfort.
