Discussion About Two Rising Technologies: Augmented Reality And Biometrics

Introduction: Over the last few years, many technologies have seen a lot of enhancement and development to make them work in a better and efficient way. Today these advancement have become a vital part of our lives and certainly have changed hard lives to simpler yet quicker. Such technologies are not so easy to create and have to be tested well across several stages prior to be launched into the stores. Nowadays numerous companies tend to want the very up-to-date technology to make sure it can work with the highest level of efficiency possible. There are countless sorts of new technologies that you can find today, these may consist of information technology, wireless data connections, bio technology, any types of customized printing or formation of robotic mechanisms. In this document, two rising technologies will be discussed.

Augmented Reality: Augmented reality(AR) is how a technology overlays computer-made pictures onto the actual world, Moreover Augmented reality utilizes the existing surroundings and shows new details on top of it. Unlike virtual reality(VR), which produces a completely artificial data.

How does it work?

It works by taking signals from the actual world using a camera. Then it examines to see if there is a point in the camera image that is telling to draw an image on a display. The most common type of augmented reality implement a number of sensors (including a camera), computer hardware’s and a monitor device to create the illusion of implict objects in the actual world. Smartphones are vastly popular these days, these devices have all the essential components, and that’s why many have been the target for the majority merchandising augmented reality applications that have been introduced. One of the most recent sample of AR is Google GlassAnother example for this technology is augmented reality translation. If you are in a foreign country and you can’t understand the sign boards because of the language, then you can use augmented reality to help you out. All you need is a device like a smartphone with a software like Word Lens and a camera. The camera uses image processing to understand what is written on the signboard. It then uses a translation tool to translate the text into a language you do understand. It then draws that translation on your camera view replacing the original image. Augmented reality is a very interesting technology and one that is getting a lot of attention these days.

Benefits of using augmented reality:

  • Rise in sales
  • Enrich content
  • Improve notoriety

Drawbacks of using augmented reality:

  • The technology still has problems with object recognition due to lighting or the angle of the camera.
  • Some of the information that AR shows could be incorrect or inaccurate
  • It is costly to develop AR technology based projects. In addition to that, the production of AR based devices is also expensive.

That’s all for the Augmented Reality, now let’s take a look at second emerging technology.

Biometrics

Biometrics is the technical term for body measurements and calculations. It refers to metrics related to human characteristics like fingerprint, iris, voice or even DNA patterns recognition. Biometrics authentication is used in computer science as a form of identification and access control.

How does it work?

Biometrics is based on comparison. The technology focuses on scanning or calculating measurements and contrasting them with formerly derived string of numbers called a template. After admission of your measurements in a system, any time a biometric is scanned into it in a request for access, the measurement of the presented biometric are compared to those described by the template. If there is a match, then access is granted, if there is not then it is denied. Biometrics is widely used nowadays. There is an enormous number of biometric technology applications and more are being coined persistently. It is implemented in many new smartphones, tablets and even in laptops. Also there is a new type of passport that’s called a Biometric passport which can store your biometric data on a chip attached to the passport. Below are the main advantages and disadvantages of this technology.

There are many advantages for using biometrics:

  • High security, due to unique individual identification
  • Multimodal Biometrics ensures 100% accuracy
  • Nearly impossible to forge or duplicate
  • Easy setup and configuration
  • Efficient: saves time and money

However, this technology has its drawbacks too:

  • Cannot be reset once compromised
  • If someone actually got your biometrics by hacking into a database where your data is stored, identity theft can occur.
  • Some people think that their human rights are being violated through the collection and use of their biological data for security reasons.
  • Biometric machines are less than perfect and errors can occur.

Conclusion: As you have seen above, numerous technologies have changed in the course of recent years. They might be further developed until they reach the end of the line where they can’t improve them anymore. Emerging Technologies means making the existing technologies better and more efficient. They also have both positive and negative impacts on our lives. Augmented reality is where technology overlays computer-generated images onto the real world. Biometrics is the use of technology that tracks biological characteristics. Both technologies are considered to be a part of the Emerging technologies.
