Domestic Terrorism: Causes And Solutions

“Domestic terrorism involves violence against the civilian population or infrastructure of a nation — often but not always by citizens of that nation and often with the intent to intimidate, coerce, or influence national policy. ” Frightening statistics, point to handguns in particular as being the most dangerous and misused firearm in society. Gun laws are the cause of most violent crimes in America, and they need to be changed to better background checks, tracking movement and sale of weapons. We used to think that severe violence took place only in city streets and in war, but now a day violence occurs in churches, schools, small towns, etc. Domestic terrorism claims millions of victims all over the world every year.

What cause violence?

One possibility could be the media. This includes music, movies, video games, etc. Research shows that viewing violent television programming has negative consequences for children. Because of media children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others. Children also may be more fearful to the world around them causing them anxiety. Media may make children more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others. It is important to realize how positive and negative factors play a role in the lives of children, youth, and young adults. We should always look for the places we can make a positive impact, no matter how small, in bettering the lives of others.

“The rate of firearm-related death or injury in the United States is the highest among industrialized countries, with more than 32, 000 deaths each year. ” America stands out as a place where gun violence has become almost accepted, just an expected story on the daily news feed. Mass shootings in the United States have unfortunately become a horrifying trend that seems to be on the rise. Schools, shopping centers, and even a movie theater are just a couple areas that have seen gun violence. It is difficult how to end this terrifying dilemma, but many just want the violence to end.

Mass shootings are nothing new, but they are happening more frequently in the modern society. Domestic terrorism has become too common on the news, and we need to make a difference other than praying. Yes, thoughts and prayers help to keep society from being more freaked out, but there is much more that we can do. It is very difficult to come up with a solution to this because schools and other public places have problems with funding when trying to increase security measures. So far the only thing people are trying to do is to stay safe in a situation where there is a mass shooter, rather than stop it all at once. Most of recent shootings seem to be “contagious”, because all the shooters’ plans and motives are almost all alike. These people have set a “stereotypical shooter” profile. These shooters are typically male, white, and around the age of twenty. Of all the mass shootings that have occurred in the United States, only one was done by a woman. They are usually lonely and introverted, and almost always socially awkward. They usually have gone through life traumas and bottle everything inside, and that is why they are full of hatred.

One solution that I think will help this problem is to spread kindness wherever possible. For example, if you see a kid who always sits alone at lunch, instead of being mean and judging the kid, say hi or talk to him/her. Another thing that will really make a difference is to stop bullying, because why spread hate when you could spread kindness. It is time to stop the violence. It is time to help each other fix a society where we can all feel safe and secure from violence. Weapons are a huge part of the problem as well. They make violence more deadly and less personal. Nine out of ten murders involve a weapon and eight out of ten involve a firearm. Weapons are only part of the problem. Attitudes and emotions are just as important and without working on all of the issues you cannot make much progress. Research shows that there is less crime where communities are working together. Some ways that we can help is by teaching others to be kind, reaching out to your community by volunteering because there are lots of people in the world that need help, and most importantly to listen. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their perspective. It is time to make a difference.
