Effects Of The Baby Boom In Canada

The baby boomers played an important role in Canadian history and made up most of the Canadian population at one point in time. The baby boom was the result of couples holding off having children post World War ll and the Great Depression era. This great phenomenon of the baby boom has impacted Canada economically, politically and socially. It comes down to how they have impacted Canada and the results being negative or positive for the next generations.

The baby boom had many effects on Canada, especially affecting Canada's economy whether it was positive or negative. One of the negative effects would be that when the baby boomers get older in age they would go into retirement causing the dependency ratio to increase. Based on the fact of all the baby boomers heading into retirement it will mean that the economic activity will soon favour healthcare, elder care, medical devices and related industries that caters more to that demographic. However the economics of the country could benefit from the baby boom by increasing the demand of housing, transportation, facilities and more all for the increasing population. As the boomers age they have shaped the focus of companies like anti-aging products that target their generation, real estate aimed at people who seek to live longer independently, investment in health care, and advances medical technology. The baby boomers have also affected the labor markets because they are remaining in the workforce for longer and holding onto jobs that would be possibly filled by the next generation, which had a positive impact on businesses because studies have shown a drop in productivity when boomers retire due to the loss of organizational intelligence. The boomers are living longer than any generation before them and have really shaped Canada's economy being retirement, health care, work force and more.

The boomer generation has impacted Canada politically in more ways than one. Firstly, this generation of individuals who are about the same age and roughly conceived around the same time period have experienced. Most often as children or young adults, specific historical events. Some of these events may have been such an economic crisis, an economic boom, a war, or significant political change and could have influenced their views of the world and potentially their political point of view which most likely will influence the next generation as well. There was such a historical change in Canada when the boomers were children or young adults like in 1960s First Nations got the right to vote, also in 1960 the Canadian Bill of Rights was approved, in 1980 Terry Fox begins his run, in 1982 the Canada Act was passed, in 1996 Gordon's Residential Schools closed and many more. These are just some historical events that could politically change the point of view of the boomers.

Lastly, the baby boomers have impacted Canada socially. One of the first impacts would be Canada's schooling, the need for new schools and teachers to accommodate the increase of population in youths. In the 1970s the first wave of baby boomers began to enter the job market. The boomers created a market for fast food, clothing fads, popular music, and cosmetics. As young adults entered the job market, unemployment rates increased. As more boomers were searching for work, jobs could not be created fast enough to keep up with the number of people. When the population increased due to the boomers most families had to move to the suburbs to escape the crowded cities, the baby boomers also thrived in their work force and contributed to newer and better products on the canadian market.

In conclusion the baby boomers have impacted Canada in multiple ways. They played a role in canadian history and have impacted Canada economically, politically and socially. The boomers have set standards for the next generations and have made a large impact in canadian history. I think that it’s not clear if the boomers impacted Canada negatively or positively. The boomers had impacted Canada positively in a way because they have raised the population, the economy and have produced better products for the next generation, but they also have the death rate is also going to be higher than the birth rate, the dependency ratio will go up and a higher unemployment rate. These are some of the positive and negative effects, but it's all how you perceive the effects of the baby boom in canada.
