Evaluation Of Ambience, Lighting & Unification Of An Exhibit The More We Get Together: Singapore’S Playgrounds 1930-2030
The overall impact of an exhibition can be judged based on a couple of factors. To name a few, these would consist of its ambience, the lighting as well as the unification aspect of it. They assist in bringing out the true intention behind the display and how it affects the mind of the viewers in certain ways. What was in store for us at the National Museum of Singapore was a very interesting exhibit designed especially for children, named “The More We Get Together: Singapore’s Playgrounds 1930-2030”. It covers a variety of topics of interest that keeps the audience engaged at all times.
The overall ambience is one of interaction as well as of cheerfulness, with a hint of nostalgia for the grown-ups. The exhibition even emits a silent and soothing vibe as a result of the chosen hues of the interior space. Children are able to interact and participate in the display due to the presence of indoor playground equipment such as a sand pit, a swing set and a tilting chair. Even the adults do not fail to express their thoughts on their fondest memories as children by writing hem on sticky notes and putting them up on the wall especially made for this purpose. This simple activity creates a sense of light-heartedness.
The exhibition design has been enhanced by the varying artificial lighting. The show is essentially split into four vignettes, each standing on its own, sort of representing a different time of the day. It begins with the crisp freshness of a bright morning graduating to the mellow calm of the night. The lighting is a warm, yellowish tinge that helps in creating a sense of comfort throughout the space. There are downlights present inside all showcases which display significant descriptive texts as well as miniatures of the objects in the evolution of the playgrounds to lay focus on them. One will also find patches of concentrated light which is cast from the ceiling by standard bulb fixtures with exposed jointing. This style of lighting has been implemented in order to achieve a natural effect, inspired by the natural source of light in the playgrounds.
Hence, an outdoor feel has been created indoors. This particular installation brings to us a clever merger of two varying age groups by the subtle art of transition. On one hand are the children, currently enjoying their time to play outdoors on swings and on the other, grown-ups, feeling nostalgic about their past as kids. Thus, this display is the perfect way to bring the two together in an experience of the mutual love they share for playgrounds. All in all, a perfect blend of childhood and adulthood.
