The Importance of Followership and Servant Leadership in the Army

Researching the topic 'Followership and Servant Leadership Army Essay' we will talk about types of leadership in the army and their value. Servant leadership and followership go hand and hand in the army. Although these two terms go hand and hand with each other they also have their differences. Whereas Servant leadership is either in a management or fellow employee capacity with the aim of achieving authority rather than power. Fellowship is the capacity and willingness to follow a leader.

As a servant leader you should respect those below you and not undermine them or take advantage of their positions to accomplish their own interests. Whereas fellowship they are required to respect those that are in charge. Followership requires you to be obedient and listen keenly to what they are told and accomplish their assigned roles in accordance with the stated guidelines whereas servant leaders are the ones who give out tasks and missions to be accomplished. A servant leader seeks to involve others in decision making and is strongly based in ethical and caring behavior, and enhances the growth of workers while improving the caring and quality of organizational life. Servant leadership “a philosophy and set of practices that enrich the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world.” 

Both, servant and fellowship leadership are the same as in how they use the army values. The first mention of followers within the Army publication of ADP 6-22, “Army Leadership is the explanation that every Army leader is also a follower”. As either one of these, you always need to remember everyone is human and you have to treat them with respect whether they are above or below you. When you are being either a servant or a fellowship leader you have to stay loyal and respect those who are both above and below you. These two terms are here not only to improve soldiers and interpersonal relationships but they are also used to make an organization greater as a whole. You cannot just have one or the other with only leaders in the army we would have no followers and with only followers, we would have no leaders that’s why these two-work hand in hand with each other “There cannot be leaders without followers, and followers need a leader”.

In conclusion, there are similarities and differences between servant leadership and followership. Both of these are key components on how we run in the military without both of these we would not be who we are today.
