Most of you probably would not recognize it, but that phrase was actually recorded in 1937 and sung by the seven dwarfs from Walt Disney’s first feature film; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. While singing the song, they expressing their feeling of tiredness, disappointment, exhaustion and sleepiness after a long day of work, reminded me from my first year of working, shredding sweat and tears just for the sake of acknowledgement from other co-worker. Based on experience, as a new comers, there are numerous ways to get acknowledge from others without making a fool out of yourself. One of the factor that tend to make other co-worker acknowledge your credibility is the ability to gain trust from them and others. Why trust is so important?
Today, more than ever, it is undeniably perceived as a fundamental resource to collaborate with one another. Trust encourage coordinated effort, extend collaboration, drive commitment and deal with never ending process of change. At the point when trust is present, people tend to do their best, working together to achieve efficiency. This then arose ‘espirit de corps’ among co-workers to have common purpose, assess risk, backing-up each other, communicate openly and think outside the box. However, if there is no trust in a team, your co-worker will tend to get into a better position than they are competing against. Other than that, your co-worker will also withhold crucial information to achieve a specific task given to you. Eventually, in all team, trust will be build and will also be broken, it’s no secret that trust is what people are seeking in work. The true question is how a new comers can easily build trust among co-workers.
In order to build trust for a newbie especially in a big company, one crucial strategy is do not procrastinate on job task. By delaying your work to be submitted on time, you eventually eradicate your trust from the management/supervisor. Unfortunately, procrastination does happen to the best of us even for the bosses. With the ever growing of technology information, we will tend to delay our task by socializing through the social media out of habits, curiosity and pleasurable. No matter how motivated we are, distracting our self from what should be done with things that unquestionably does not need to be done can appear the most engaging alternative. There are numbers of ways to overcome procrastination, first thing first is to find the flow and try to stay in it. Try to find the right time in a day that you tend to be most creative and best at thinking. Avoid doing any things that are not related to your task during that time and try to maximize your productivity. As for me, the ideal time to work is during lunch time where people are less in the office and there’s no one to gossip with me. On top of that, I save a lot of money just skipping lunch, making me feel healthier and motivated.
The second thing to remind yourself is not to multi task. According to Leisa Taylor, multitasking is a myth. We never complete to things by doing it at once, we only do one thing at a time, and it is just our brains switch forward and backward. The ideal things to do in this scenario is to segregate to task into small job then work your way from start to finish without any interruption, we will probably oppose interference when we are near completing an errand. As a new comer, it is wise that to display competency in work task. A new comer that is looking to be an outstanding executive in the company must put on a spectacle of highly integrity and honesty characteristic. It is wise to be honest in certain task, if you do not know how to handle a certain task that was assign to you, then it is wise to let your subordinate or supervisor know that you have less experience on that matter, employee forgive a lack of knowledge but they never forgive liar. We must also drives for results, consistency on meeting the team goals, commitment on the task given and meeting the deadlines are crucial in a department. Lack of knowledge are just an excuse, try to create a plan by getting input from other colleague which reflect the seriousness of getting the job done. Displaying a competency as a new comer will tend to make a person more real, respected and positioned for progress in the company. In a company or institution, there are many standard policies and procedure from how we dress, what time we need to show up to small details like content for the email signature. These shows how company does not trust their employee.
However, due to growing millennial company that thrive in the industry able to put trust in their employee, like Google, Facebook, Netflix and many more, company nowadays tend to shift their perspective and put trust in their employee which reflect in creativity. A survey done by Deloitte also proof that millennials are keener to stay with a company that allow their employee to express ideas among all team members. Large corporation, like Petronas and Maxis are now starting to reduce their dictatorship by allowing flexible time when entering the office to show that they trust their employee. As a new comers, we must take this advantage and allow our self to take thoughtful risk to improve work task. As example, if you are assign specific task, try not to stick with old method of solving it, open yourself to new outcomes and try to improve those old excel sheet that you constantly using by investing your time to understand new advance template. Rest assure, corporation that does not acknowledge risk taking employee are pushing away a massive group of workers that have potential to become excellent employees.
Becoming a new comer in a corporation is not easy, once offer letter has been sign and submitted, you need to understand that the manager or supervisor that hired you already begin to set high expectation on you and it is your responsibility to prove that he/she does not making the wrong decision. It is also the duty of a new comer to set high expectation on where are you heading in the company, whether to learn as much as possible in order to apply it to your future business or having your eye on the main seat. New comer who succeed expect nothing less than success, problem must be approach as opportunity, having high expectation and a can-do attitudes will eventually lead you to triumph.
To summarize, new comer need to understand how trust work in a teams and understand the complexities and the challenges arose from it. Furthermore, knowing where trust stands in a team will embrace opportunities to learn, growth and development in career. Besides that, having a trusted team members will help new comer to gain awareness on how other team member behavior that contribute to productivity and become aware of the action that tend to create spark for greater impact on teamwork.
