Issue Of Gender And Race Discrimination In Film Hidden Figures
There have been obstacles for women in terms of employment in the past decades. A woman is expected to be a mother and raise her children, clean, and cook while the husband goes out to pursue his dreams. Women are capable of doing the same jobs as men they should not have to hide in the shadows of their husbands. Women deserve equal opportunities; they should not have to face barriers to achieve their dreams.
Women are known for not working in certain fields, especially in the scientific community. They are overlooked because a woman is seen as less competitive and less strong than a man is. In the movie Hidden Figures, three dedicated African American women prove society wrong; they were able to get a job at NASA as human computers. This is a hard job to get because you have to meet all of NASA's qualifications to get in. The main reason that they were able to get the job is because NASA was in desperate need for qualified people and they fit the description. Working there was not easy for them either. These women had to work twice as hard just to prove themselves worthy. Every day they had to work twice as hard to show that Africa American women are capable of working for NASA too.
On top of that, due to their race, these three women had to fight to get into schools and programs, just to deserve their jobs. Their spots at NASA was not given to them, they worked hard every day to graduate to earn this job so they could live a better life and support their family. It is generally uncommon to see women working in the scientific field. These women were very persistent and courageous even though their lives and careers were damaged by racism. Jim Crow’s laws mandated separate but equal; which made African Americans' lives harder. In this case, yes, the three women were able to work for NASA but they could not do the same thing the whites were doing. The three African American women had go distances just to use the bathroom and had to drink from different fountains. There is not thing equal about this; the three women were looked at as underdogs, although, they have proved their point of being human computers. However, they had to make do with separate but equal.
Similarly, women are not expected to have a career; they are underestimated. In the movie Hidden Figures, Dorothy Vaughan was as a mathematician who works as a human-computer at Langley. She spends most of her time with her children and church. She wanted to better herself, in order to do that she had to take the risk of leaving her town to take the opportunity to make more money to support her family, like the other two main characters in the movie Katherine and Mary. The choices these women made were in the pursuit of their happiness; they made sacrifices to start their career. To mention, the three women played a vital role in NASA.
Additionally, all men are created equal, this should include women too. Yes, women could work the same job as a man can but they are being paid less. Although, it hasn’t always been this way women have been slowly moving into paid employment outside of the home in ways that their grandmother would never dream of. Before women was expected to stay home to care for the children, cook, clean, always have dinner prepared, and cater to the husband's needs. As read in the essay Girl, “this is how you set a table for dinner; this is how you set a table for tea; this is how you sweep a whole house”. This is a one-sided conversation between the author and her mom, she tells her all that she expects from her in order to be considered respectful. In the 1904s, many mothers had an old fashion way of thinking of what women should be. Women are expected to dress, eat, walk, and talk a certain way so that they are not looked upon badly. It was thought if you were to cover your body more you’re seen as respectable. Women go through all of this just to stay home with the kids and be in the shadow of their husbands. Women did not even have full control of their kids, the husband did. Women didn’t have much say. Men are the rulers over America, forgetting that there are women too. Women are the reason why men are alive.
Correspondingly, women were not allowed to do many jobs. Even though, women could be more useful to a job because they can diffuse a situation better in a more compassionate and intellectual manner than a man would. Women deserve equality, which could be achieved by the assurance that every person in society is supported and could have access to decision-making, respecting, valued, and recognized opinions.
In closing, women deserve the same rights as a man they work just as hard. Women are willing to go out of their way to sacrifice everything that they have to support their families. Lastly, we are all made equal, so we should all be treated equal. This has been a problem for many jobs, especially in the scientific world. Women are not getting the credit they deserve for all that they do. Women work twice as hard by being able to support her family and her career. Women are amazing beings who deserve equal chances in the scientific world and any other job, they are capable of doing a man’s job if anything they could do it better. For years it was uncommon to see African American women working for NASA but these three incredible women proved history wrong, they proved to themselves and others that they are capable of working through any obstacles that NASA throws at them. Women do not deserve this treat including African American women, they do not deserve to be locked up in the house and not being able to chase their dreams. We all have rights, your gender nor should the color of your skin prohibit you from getting a job.
