Leadership Statement: Defining Yourself as a Leader
Introduction
Who are you, what type of leader are you, what type of personal leadership strengths do you bring to the table. The purpose of this leadership statement examples will be to identify and evaluate my top three personal strengths as a leader according to the Better Up Whole person strengths report. This paper will also discuss how my strengths are out in to action, how my family, friends and co-workers see me when I am at my best. I will also cover my leadership statement, and finally I will discuss mt experience with my Better Up leadership coach.
My Top 3 Leadership Strengths
Flow – I thrive as an individual I have the ability to get “in the zone” at work. Balancing my skills with the challenges I can take on allow me to become fully immersed in my work, be creative, and love what I do. With Flow as my strength it allows me to focus for long periods of time on a single project, with Flow as my strength I also sometimes lose track of time when I am particularly absorbed, and finally with.
An example of this would be my personal style forgetting so involved in my work that I sometime lose track of time, I sometime forget to go to lunch because I am so wrapped up in a project that all I can see is the goal. Even when the project is hard or not easy to see the finish line I work until it is done even if that means losing track of time.
Coaching – I guide and support others’ development. I have the ability to provide insight and resources to support the growth and development of others, by guiding, correcting, and encouraging, so that others can be at their best. Since the best managers are great coaches I am well placed to lead a team. With Coaching as my strength, it allows me to provide opportunities for others to learn and develop. With Coaching as my strength, it allows me to encourage others to set performance and career goals, and finally with Coaching as my strength I am able to ask open- ended questions to stimulate others’ thinking.
An example of this would be my personal style for guiding other in their development. At my current company I could see that we as a team where lacking in leadership development for our managers. I was able to set up a leadership training for the management team that allowed them to learn different management styles, and how to incorporate them into their daily leadership style.
Influence – I win others over to my side, with my ability to use logic and persuasion to get others on board with an idea. This makes me a respected team member, this also helps garner resources for my projects.
With Influence as my strength, it allows me to use logic and evidence to persuade others. With Influence as my strength it allows me to how proposed ideas align with outcomes, and finally with Influence as my strength I can get others’ input and appeal to values and ideals to get others on board.
An example of this is getting our upper management team to change HRIS systems. After seeing that the system we had in place was not able to handle the amount of business we were doing as a company I was able to set up a meeting with higher ups and discuss what we were lacking and how making a change to our HRIS system would change the way we did business.
According to two family members, one co-worker- and my best friend at my best I am driven, supportive, focused, motivational, and optimistic to everyone around me. When asked to give an example of a time when I was at my best each person choose a last year when I had two kids who where getting ready to graduate high school, while I was also in school finishing my BS degree. During this time, I was told that any one else would have been all over the place, but not me I was able to stay on the path I had set for myself while also motivating my kids to stay on their path toward their goal. I was able to give tough love when they needed it but also help to show them that I had their back and they had my full support as they were completing their journey. Because of this I was able to get both kids graduated and off to college and finish my degree within the following month.
My Leadership Statement
As a leader, I want to lead with compassion, and fairness. Inspire everyone around me to work their hardest to achieve their goals while motivating them to reach their full potential my purpose is to be an inspiration to those around me. I want to motivate them to be more and dream bigger than they ever thought possible. I want them to never stop reaching for the stars. As a leader I value commitment, transparency, and communication. Through this I will continue to build relationships with my colleagues this includes the higher ups and the everyday working-class man or woman to understand their professional and personal goals better. When there is a shared understanding of personal and professional goals, we can help each other achieve any goal. By being strong, resilient and facing problems head on with a sense of control, this will allow me to show people that all things are possible. I believe that this will inspire the people in my life to never give up, even when thing get hard and they feel like they can’t face it, I want them to have the fight to continue to try until they succeed.
Leadership Coaching
Going into the Better Up coaching session, I did not know what to expect. During my session, I quickly realized that the leadership skills that I use at home as a mom and as a wife are the same leadership skills I use the most at work. Through the Better Up coaching, I was able to also see what other skills I used on the regular and never noticed that I was using them, and what skills I need to improve on using more. Leadership coaching is a great way to tweak the skills I have and develop skills I haven’t used. During my session, my coach assisted me in coming up with ways I could implement more of my leadership skills on a day to day basis. I have confidence that everyone could benefit from having at least one session with a leadership coach. I have found that this exercise has a helped me articulate a plan to achieve my career goals.
Conclusion
In conclusion, knowing what my leadership strengths are, will allow me to be a better me, to come up with a game plan that will help me reach all my goals whether they be work or personal. By having a chance to talk with someone and go over my leadership skills I will be able to adjust what I am currently doing and become a better version of myself. By having the opportunity to speak with other (family, friends, and co-workers) on who I am at my best was, was an eye-opening experience. I’m a naturally driven person, being the oldest of 5 kids I have always had to be the leader and set the example for my younger sibling.
It was fascinating to hear feedback from the people in my life about who I am at my best. As I go forward, I plan to use the results of the assessment to help me evolve in to a stronger, more well-rounded leader.
