Lessons Learnt From Preceptor Visit

In the interview, I asked my preceptor about the challenges he faced as a doctor and whether his perception towards medicine has changed since medical school. He told me that the reality of being a doctor is very different from what he expected as a medical student, where working in public hospitals has shown him that a medical career can be demoralizing at times and that, occasionally, doctors can do more harm than good. He also told me that there will undoubtedly be frustrated times in my career and times where things are so difficult that one might lose their passion in the subject. Nevertheless, he said that he finds it very rewarding to help people, especially helping the small minorities who couldn’t be treated using conventional techniques through the use of alternative therapy. Addressing the high level of stress in a medical career, my preceptor told me the importance of effective time management and putting one’s focus on personal life and family rather than money. When asked about advices for medical students, my preceptor told me to never forget the reason of why I want to study medicine. He told me that looking back on this reason will guide me through the frustrated times in my career.

In the preceptor visit, I’ve learnt that a doctor’s job is not only to cure, but to provide comfort and relief. I understood that as doctors, we cannot always cure but can and should always provide comfort and reassurance through our words and actions. I also saw the importance of acting in the best interest of the patient and having a holistic approach in patient care. Previously I thought that the practice of medicine was essentially diagnosing a physiological anomaly and providing suitable interventions to treat that anomaly. However, after observing several consultations, I saw that the psychological and emotional aspects of the patient are just as, if not more, important and should not be overlooked. I’ve also learnt that empathy and attention to details are highly important in providing care. For example, I previously did not realize that simple actions such as being talkative during a surgical procedure can reassure the patient as they cannot see what is happening on the operation table.

Observing consultations, I also understood that a doctor-patient relationship should not be physician-dominant. I realized that doctors are only there to participate in the shared decision-making process with the patient by providing medical advices and alternatives. I also saw the importance of effective communication. Speaking with clarity, thoroughly and in terms that the patient can comprehend is essential in ensuring that the patient is well informed before making a decision.

Speaking to the preceptor, I understood that doctors should always practice with humility. Humility does not only bring about mutual respect between fellow colleagues and allows effective teamwork to occur, it also makes an individual competent as that individual can recognize the extent of his or her ability. Apart from showing me effective patient approach, this preceptor visit has also brought to my attention to some of the more negative aspect of a medical career, such as the emotional and physical toll on a doctor.
