Mister Pip By Loyd Jones: The Impact Of Conflict On A Person’S Life
Conflict can take significant control of a person’s life and influence them. Matilda, the main character in Mister Pip by Loyd Jones grows up on a deserted island during a civil war. She see’s that the differences between race tear her community apart. Matilda’s experiences and Mr. Watts’s presence on the island cause conflict within her society, but as she matures and leaves the island, she realizes her perspective of Mr. Watts has changed. Therefore Matilda perspective changes into one that believes Mr. Watts was a man who dimished conflict and protected childhood innoconcce by his use of imagination.
The lack of understanding of the outside world in Mathilda’s community causes a poor misconception about Mr. Watts and his intentions which creates conflict. Matilda viewed him as “a source of mystery” and someone who “is lost”(26) because he lived a life that involved little interaction with everyone on the island. As Matilda grew up she believed “white to be the color of all the important things” which is why she believed he had higher power over the rest of the villagers because of his race. He becomes the center of intention when his house is spared after all the rest are burned by the redskins. All the villagers believe “The redskins wouldn’t do anything to cause white displeasure” and this angers the villagers because they feel that it is unfair and they hold Mr. Watts responsible. They also blame Mr. Watts for introducing a piece of literatutre called Great Expectations which is a book that provides knowledge into the white world. The Island felt this work undermined there way of life because It contained a world that was whole and made sense”, which was very unlike there. The idea of the white world was so unlike there’s the unfamiliarity caused them conflict. So the villagers would take out there anger out on Mr. Watts even though.
The introduction of the white world was so unlike the world the people of the island were accustomed to and the unfamiliarity caused some to questioned their beliefs. In, conclusion Mr. Watts involvement in the society created cronterversy because of the lack of knowledge that citzens had. The aftermath of the conflict that happened on the Island developed matildas maturity into new perspectives about who Mr. Watts really was.
After the conflict happened on the island Matilda’s opinion of Mr. Watts develops into one that is more mature. Once she has left it “occurred to her that she never once saw Mr. Watt with a machete - his survival weapons was story”. Her adult point of view on this shows how the conflict made her change and see Mr. Watt in a new way to form a positive perspective about him. Matilda realized how different he was from the people from her village. Citzens from her village would have applied “violence with weapons during conflict” but, Mr. Watts would find a peaceful approach. Matilda comes to realize to Mr. Watts was a supportive adult figure in her life who “was whatever he needed to be, what we asked him to be. . . a teacher, a magician, a savior, a life”. He vauled the importance of protecting matilda’s innonce and preventing her from the fearful world by using his imagination and his idea of providing support on being whatever the children want to block out all the negative effects the war brought to the Island. In conclusion, Matilda’s realization that Mr. Watts was man who has values to his life shows her maturity.
In conclusion Mr. Watts presence on the Island created conflict but it tought tought Mathilda how to mature. She realized that his peaceful approach and his imagination to escpae from reality had values within her life. Conflict teaches youth how to see the best out of each other to influence them in a positive way.
