Moral Debate And Controversy Around Abortion
“A person is a person no matter how small,'' a quote from Dr. Suess(Wise Old Sayings). This quote shows an example of how pro-life supporters defend the life of a fetus. Because abortion has been a topic in politics, people are beginning to understand the logistics and take sides, standing up for what they think is right. Pro-Life is the understanding that a fetus begins living the instant fertilization occurs and that the unborn baby should be given a chance to live.
Having an abortion cannot only effect your body but also your emotional state. Losing a baby is a tough and emotional battle that women go through daily in the United States. There are 5 different abortion options that a women can choose from, each abortion takes place at a different stage during pregnancy and depends on when you chose to have the operation. The two most popular abortion options would be Methotrexate and Misoprostol and a Vaccum Aspiration.
Methotrexate and Misoprostol are two different pills that you can start taking within the first 7 weeks of your pregnancy. Methotrexate causes the cells in the embryo to stop multiplying while Misoprostol causes the “uterus to contract and release its contents” (HeathLine). The other most popular type of abortion is a Vaccum Aspiration takes place during either the first or early second trimester. “A small tube is inserted into the uterus and suction begins to breakdown the fetus inside, pulling all of the limbs off and eventually pulls the whole fetus out”(HeathLine). Women can emotionally be effected after having an abortion in different ways but most commonly women suffer from, “regret and depression”(American Pregnancy Association) after going through an abortion. care system or put them up for adoption.
People usually don’t share their opinions or standpoint on a topic unless someone disagrees with them. Abortion has been really popular lately in politics due to the fact that Pro-Life indivuals are standing up for what they believe is right. Some ways that Pro-Life and Pro-Choice people share their opinions are through court hearings or protests. Many different pro-abortion protests took place in 2019. A specific protest happened on May 21, 2019, over 50 abortion organizations took part in a #StoptheBans protest taking place in New York. Pro-Choice affiliators argue that when laws or regulations come out restricting women and their descisions based on abortions it henders their reproductive rights.
Pro-Life people are aware that Roe v. Wade was a law passed that made it leagal to have an abortion but, the main point that Pro-Life affiliators want to get across to people is that, that unborn baby or fetus was given as a gift from the creator of this world and is an innocent soul that doesn’t even have a chance at their own life or opportunities if it’s killed during pregnancy. Senator Clyde Chambliss states, “Life is a gift [from] our creator and we must do everything that we can to protect life. And if it is a couple of million dollars, that is a small, small price for those lives”(Alabama Abortion Ban), that fetus should be given a chance just like you did.
During the same month a Heartbeat Bill was passed by Georgia, Missouri, and Ohio. The bill bans an abortion past 6 weeks of pregnancy when a heartbeat can be detected. Courts ruled out that, “if an abortion was to take place after the 6 week limit the people that participated could face up to 10 years in prison”(Vox). No bills have been placed into practice because of the “challenge and [push back the] court will face”(Vox). Nonetheless, both sides are fighting back and pushing hard to get what they want to get passed and launched into action.
Abortion can be seen and taken in a lot of different ways. A person’s opinion could depend on their morals, religion, or a personal connection to it. An example of a huge argument that Pro-Choice individuals make is that, “personhood begins after a fetus becomes viable or after birth, not at conception”(ProCon). Many people don’t believe that a fetus is alive while in the womb, even once he/she has a heartbeat, organs, or limbs. Everyone has the ability to believe what they want to but biology says, “Human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization”(Keith Moore, Princeton Edu). This statement is backed up from hundreds of facts and tests that have been used as evidence to humankind to show that after fertilization happens inside the womb, that fetus is living.
I understand that everyone has a right to their own opinion and I have my own opinions about the topic of abortion too. I’m a christian and I believe that God gave you a gift of life even if it’s not how you planned. The problem I have with abortion is that people don’t make their decision of whether they want to keep the baby or carry through with an abortion until they are well into their 1st trimester or the beginning of the 2nd trimester. By that time the fetus inside the womb has a beating heart, limbs, organs and even starts to develop skin. I do not like the image of having a baby sucked out of a uterus once the baby is viable, such a cruel thing that a person could do. The act of an abortion in my eyes is murder but, apperently it’s not. Killing a fetus is the same thing as killing a 45 year old man. That fetus should have a chance at life outside the womb, even if that mom doesn’t want the baby you can still put them into the foster care system or put them up for adoption. If people understood more about pregnancy and safe sex I don’t think that abortion and teen pregnancy would be such a hot topic in society today.
In closing, everyone has viable opinions and ideas. Abortion is a tough topic to talk about especially if that person has a personal connection to an instence reguarding abortion. Both Pro-Life and Pro-Choice sides are fighting to push everything they want into action and to get everything to work out for the better. Abortion has been an example of how passionate people are about certain topics. The uprising of abortion conversations has lead to many people beginning to understand what happens during an abortion and chose where they stand in this abortion battle.
