Morality And Normalization Of Abortion In American Culture
Since the 1970s, the topic of abortion has been a contraversial subject since the rulings of Roe v Wade, but more so in recent years, the topic has been at it’s highest rate, with new talks within the states and federal government, and large arguments by high standing figures debating on whether it is right or not. The reality of the subject though should be clear to most, abortion is a horrid crime against children that should be granted a life, but that life was taken away by a selfish and irresponsible mother. The crime of abortion can be narrowed into several key points, based on it’s morality, human rights, and the normalization of it in our culture.
Firstly, the morality of abortion and the rights of the fetus, with this usually being the main topic of the subject, this essay will begin with such. Many people of the pro-choice side believe the right of the mother greatly outweighs the child’s rights to life, but this idea is flawed, as is outlined by the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, it states in it’s first paragraph “causes the death of, or bodily injury (as defined in section 1365) to, a child, who is in the utero at the time the conduct takes place, is guilty of a separate offense under this section.”. This describes how even though the Roe v Wade ruling states that an abortion is legal, the law contradicts itself by stating the act of murder to the child in the uterus to be illegal. It is also immoral act, as it is still a human and still has the right to life, which is stated in our Declaration of Independence as an “unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” The use of abortion has also been seen as a way for a mother to get out of taking care of a child instead of being responsible enough to take care and love that child. As outlined by the “Procon”, a website based on arguments and giving points for both sides, it describes that “Conceptions rose by nearly 30 percent, but births actually fell by 6 percent, indicating that many women were using abortion as a method of birth control, a crude and drastic sort of insurance policy.' This use of abortion of birth control just shows that women are no longer using it for the greater good, but instead abusing it to the point it has lost it’s original meaning.
Secondly, the normalization of abortion in our culture. With it being nearly 50 years since Roe v Wade, many see this as the defining and only point that needs to be made on whether it should be legal or not, as since it has been decided once, it no longer needs to be discussed and should be implemented as a standard practice and should be normalized, but this should never be the case, as this practice is an act that is almost on the border of illegal as previously stated in the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, as well as this practice making seem as though that human life is not unique, but disposable, and worthless. Some in this world have also recognize this act as horrid and should never be normalized, such as the well beloved leader Pope Francis, who stated in his 2014 speech, where he said, “I think primarily of innocent children discarded even before they are born, unwanted at times simply because they are ill or malformed, or as a result of the selfishness of adults.”. When Pope Francis, a man seen as one of the most morally good and purest persons of this Earth, says that an act such as abortion is inhumane, it should make it clear that this act should be troubling to all people of this nation and of this world.
Thrice and finally, for the final segment I will address my counterpart’s claims. The main point addressed here will be that the child has no capability and access to rights as he is within the womb and the child’s fate belongs solely to the mother, which has been reinforced by some credible people as well, such as Sandra Day O’Connor, a former supreme court justice, who stated in the 1992 court ruling named Planned Parenthood v Casey, where she said, “The ability of women to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation has been facilitated by their ability to control their reproductive lives.”
