Music – A Thing To Make Life Stop
Everyone needs something to make life stop. Just for a moment everyone needs a break from the everyday routine, worries of the future, or even thoughts from the past. For me, music is this thing. I can put on some headphones and forget even my surroundings, the rhythms and mixed tones warping around me to form its own reality. Listening to music is great, but playing it is even better. When I pick up my instrument and play a song that I am able to relate to and put feeling and emotion into the notes, that is when I am happy. But music goes beyond just being an escape hole from the world. As Plato said “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. ” Now, some people would go on to explain how music changed their life, but I can’t. This is because music shaped my life, as it probably has everyone else’s too. Music is everywhere, on the radio, in the store, playing in the lobby of the auto-repair store as you wait for them to find your keys they apparently misplaced.
You can even find music in your car as you wait at a stop light that seems like it lasts forever and are listening to the rain on the roof, the blinker of your left turn arrow, and the squeak of the windshield wipers that you meant to have replaced last weekend. Without music reading wouldn't be the same for me. Often when I am reading a good book there is a soundtrack playing in my head as if the book was a movie. But music itself is like a story. It has a beginning, middle and end and can be major or minor or both. The combination of scales, melodies, rhythms, dynamics, 3ds 5ths 7ths, all control the plot and explain the deeper meaning behind the notes if you just know how to listen. Music is not just black ink on a page, it is an art through time. Painters paint on canvas, musicians decorate time. It breaks up the monotony of life. Music expresses what we can not explain. Music is therapy. It is a way to express sadness, anger, jealousy, hatred, and longing without hurting anyone around you, or yourself. We all know that when we are angry, our actions are influenced by this anger until we recover. Music is an empty space waiting to be filled with all your feelings, and emotions. It soaks them up like a sponge, leaving you feeling empty. But not in a bad way, because what is left is happiness and contentment.
