My Aspiration To Build A Career In the Adult Nursing Sphere
My passion to make a difference in people's life developed at the age of 15, after my first experience of working with vulnerable people. Working in a care home encouraged me to grow and expand my relationships with people from different religions and backgrounds; which also drew my attention to nursing. Nursing is a demanding and challenging career which requires someone dedicated, reliable and trustworthy. Working in a care home helped me achieve these skills and now I am excited to practice a career which will allow me to help and care for people.
Choosing nursing as a career really interests me as I am passionate to do something makes a difference in people's life on a daily basis. It is extremely satisfying when I am able to help patients' and families in their difficult times and deal with many aspects of patients' care. Becoming a nurse will fulfill my desire of investing my time in enriching patients' lives every day, working in a ever changing and growing career area. I undertook a work placement in a care home for adults with learning difficulties and the service users there had various conditions and needs such as Parkinson Disease and Dementia. I learnt how to use my initiative to balance and meet their individual needs, and my communication skills to help keep them calm and feel supported. I enjoy working under pressure and effectively treating people and comforting them when they are upset or in need.
My aspiration to become a nurse was enhanced further by my employment in a local nursing home as a Care Assistant where I developed some of the skills and qualities needed to become a nurse. As a care assistant I was responsible for working directly with patients in carrying out routine personal care duties. This involved identifying the patient's requirements, assisting in activities and helping with physical tasks.
Honing my organisational skills, it is important to establish daily routines that benefit the patient's needs. I use my active listening skills when discussing a patient with senior staff which is a key skill that nurses need. Effective teamwork and clear communication are essential in the smooth running of the care home or a hospital. I have also developed excellent time management skills by meeting deadlines for assignments at college whilst working part time.
On my Access course I enjoyed studying Anatomy and Physiology and I look forward to discovering more about how the human body works at a higher level. My preferred modules were Human Body Systems and Care Disorders for which I achieved distinction. I also enjoyed discovering how nurses stop infections from spreading and how they care for an individual with a specific disorder.
In my spare time, I like to relax so I can reflect on what has happened in the day which will also be important for me to do when I am a nurse; as being a nurse can be stressful and emotionally challenging. I like to exercise, mainly going for a walk or cycling, which helps me to refresh myself. Besides exercising I also enjoy reading and listening to music.
I am currently taking a short break from education, to further my experience in Healthcare, by working in care, supporting individuals in their own homes. This will further develop my confidence and initiative in supporting a range of clients. I am also working part-time as a childminder.
I understand that nursing is a challenging career to go into as nurses are required to have the capability to make decisions, show compassion and sustain the diverse needs of individuals in their care. I am certain that I will meet these challenges as I will test my skills and abilities to the limit. Studying on the Adult Nursing course will help me fulfill my ambition of supporting and treating others as well as gaining a fulfilling career.
