My Attitude To GMO Products
Whenever I hear about GMOs my thinking goes straight towards food. The reason being, I hear about artificial flavors in food and the foods have been modified in this way or in that type of way. Some ways are that they have been modified by altering the genetic material or improvising the seeds to facilitate a faster growth of a particular crop. Artificial flavours can modify food too by making you think what it tastes like than what it actually is. GMOs are actually those plants or seeds or a particular crop that is modified scientifically to get a different result. Should we be eating and growing GMO products? In my opinion, I would say no because of the way that they have been modified could affect our immune system, not being immune to that product. But if we grow modified crops, there are several advantages because these genetically modified crops could withstand adverse weather conditions or may be immune to certain pests.
This could save millions of dollars eventually. For instance, in the ted talks video, Pamela Ronald said that they had experimented and time lapsed half a field filled with the modified rice and half filled with the original seeds and in my opinion, I’d say that the modified rice would be better for rice farmers so that they aren't losing crops and are being able to save money as well.
Do GMOs need to be labeled? In my opinion, I’d say yes because then we will know if that crop has been modified or if it is organic. Also, the labels would be useful as they would let us know that we are going to be eating something that has been genetically modified. Do GMOs need more testing, in my opinion, I would say yes because we don't want to be eating stuff that could have diseases and bacteria that could make us poisoned or hurt our internals.
Apart from that, the GMOs have been out for a while but we still can't trust it because could injure or even kill us since the side effects of GMOs are not clinically proven. So, in my opinion, I would say that they need more testing to make sure that if they did mess around with the genes then it would be safer at the least for us as humans to eat. Should organisms be able to be patented?
They should be invented but if they aren't safe for us to eat then they should be modifying the genetics, even more, to test and make sure it does not cause harm to us. Monsanto and roundup ready corn are already ahead in developing new types of corn but the con is that if the corn seeds get transported by air. Both the companies will sue the farmers because they are illegally growing their crop on their farm. Another con about these seeds is that they could only be grown once and the farmers are losing money because of them having to buy new seeds each year because if they grow the GMO product it can't reproduce the seeds because its genes have been altered with. Would GMOs be able to stop drought? According to science. time. com some GMO crops would be able to grow with very little amounts of water and could even end up growing through a drought in the upcoming future. How do we know who to trust with this type of science? It should be the geneticists that we should be trusting due since they do so much research on this science.
Overall I think that GMOs are great because we could be inventing new types of natural varieties of that crop. In conclusion, I feel GMOs are great.
