My Desire To Work As A Nurse
As a child I spent a period of time in hospital where I witnessed the caring nature of the nurses on the ward, my heart first became set on becoming a children’s nurse at that time. The tireless and compassionate nature of the children's nurses inspired me and encouraged me to want to do the same thing. Seeing the way the nurses dealt with the most difficult circumstances and treated each child and their families, depending on their individual needs, made me realise that this was the right career route for me. Knowing that I have the right skills and attributes to become a children’s nurse makes me feel extremely excited about working as and becoming devoted to being a children’s nurse.
In 2009, Donna Wilk Cardillo wrote ‘When I think about all the patients and their loved ones that I have worked with over the years, I know most of them don’t remember me nor I them. But I do know that I gave a little piece of myself to each of them and they to me’. This quote helped me realise that although children’s nursing is challenging and demanding, I am determined to push through the hard times and put in the time and effort to provide the best care possible to the people around me.
My placement was one of the best experiences I have had so far. Working in a school for children with additional needs helped me to understand the ways that you care for people and how everyone needs to receive different types of care to benefit them in the best way. Volunteering in this school made me a more empathetic and compassionate person, and the feeling of being able to empower children and help them to make their own decisions shows me that I can make a huge difference in people’s lives.
Talking to the nurses at the school helped me to understand the rewards that come from working as a children’s nurse and made me feel more excited about working towards becoming a nurse myself. I have also attended a medical school lecture course at Newcastle University where I learnt a lot about the different types of medical professions. This helped me with my research into going to university and gave me a lot of confidence in choosing to do nursing. I am a qualified beach lifeguard and I have also taken lifesaving lessons, as well as competing as a lifeguard.
I joined a swimming club at the age of eight and went onto join a lifesaving club at the age of eleven after becoming interested in first aid, and learning how to help people since I was young. I learnt how to help people in all areas of first aid, including how to do CPR. When I did my beach lifeguard course I learnt how to deal with all types of casualties, including how to help people when they are injured or unconscious in the water. I feel that doing lifesaving for the past few years has demonstrated how passionate I am about helping people and ensuring the health and wellbeing of the people around me.
This gave me the confidence I need to know that I can achieve what I want to and that I will be the right person for this career and course. Since 2010, I have been through school and college with 100% attendance, which shows that I’m reliable and I will not let anyone down. I prioritise work and have great teamwork skills as well as being able to adapt to handle difficult clients. I also know how to work for the needs of different age categories. I like learning how to do new things all the time and if I’m working under pressure I push myself to work harder and I will always do my best to get work done to the best of my ability.
I understand that there are lows and extremely challenging moments that come with working as a nurse, but the thought of being able to be the difference in even one person’s life confirms that this is the right career for me. The compassion and duty of care that nurses have and the courage that you need to be a good care provider ensures that I am the right person for this course and makes me feel enthusiastic about my future in this career.
