My Involvement In Academic Discourse Communities

Going for my first semester at Sacramento State University can be stressing and a new experience for every student attending. Every student has to attend classes, see a counselor about their major take different classes to expand their knowledge and least but not last be part of a discourse community. Two of my discourse communities that I belong to are being a student at Sacramento State University and being a member of the Accounting Society Club. Being a part of an academic discourse community is something that is not easy to achieve. In the article “Discourse Communities” Gary D. Schmidt and William J. Vande Kopple explains an academic discourse community “as a group of pupils who share ways to claim, organize, communicate and evaluate meanings. ” Taking part of a discourse community, I share traits of the manners of speaking that is approved rhetorically, logically, ethically, and support distinct expressions that is thought suitable by each members of the academic discourse community. My two academic discourse communities that I belong to are my Accounting Society and being a student at Sacramento State University.

A discourse community consists of people and genres of written communication to achieve a common goal. Being a pupil at Sacramento State is a discourse community that I belong to. In order to be a student, you require to possess a high school diploma or GED. At the university I take classes that I require for my major and when the class begins we get to mingle, get to be acquainted with one another better and we share our personage and goals. My goal is to achieve in getting my bachelor’s in accounting and obtain an employment that I can bolster myself in the future. Each class that I take contains assignments, projects, exams, quizzes and more. With the aim to succeed education is a demand. In Sacramento State I frequently require altering my way of speaking.

I use formal speech with my professors and semi-formal speech with my classmates. The principles of this community are many but the most significant are that you must attend classes, obtain a passing grade, honor your professors and classmates and turn in assignments on time. Each class that I take has its own style of instructions and learning. The communications utilized in this academic discourse community is humongous, there are blackboard, projectors, computers, emails, letters, notebook, essay papers, books and diverse internet pages, for example Canvas, SacCT, MyMathLab. In my Accounting class we use Canvas to view announcements, quizzes, assignments, grades and others. This discourse community possess a diversity of subjects and it relies on classes and student’s interests, however there is a common matter in all of classes that is spoken about and that is the success you will get in your personal and professional life. This specific discourse community trains you to put an effort for what you want to get in your life.

Apart from being a student at Sacramento State I am part of the Accounting Society Community we do lots of projects and many times I applied the Pagel’s idea of “visual theft “that Mark Pagel talks about it in his Ted Talk Show called “ How Language Transformed Humanity” and more Mark Pagel gives us the meaning of “visual Theft “ is when “we can learn something just by watching someone ,which leads to stealing the idea and benefitting from it without putting any labor “. Many of the new students at Sacramento State are in a new environment look at how other students behave which without thinking we end up using Pagel’s idea of “Visual Theft”. In my Accounting Society we concentrate on learning how to analyze financial statements and the processes for use in the financial analysis, learn how accounting standards and managerial incentives affects the financial reporting process. The reasons I chose my accounting community is because it is a challenging course and it takes a big effort that you need to have self-motivation and determination. The aim of my Accounting community is to pass the classes we take, be able to take your Certified Public Accountant Exam (CPA) and find a job.

In my Accounting Society Community, we form groups in which it teaches us how to work with different instructions to solve a dilemma that is given to us and find a better solution which is unique to our own group and better than other groups. Communication is important in the Accounting community. In TED Talk “How Language Transformed Humanity “Mark Pagel tells us “Language is a piece of social technology for enhancing the benefits of cooperation’s –for reaching agreements, for striking deals and for coordinating our activities. ” The objective of the Accounting Society is to help us get used to the business environment and connect with new and different people and students, and hopefully help us find a good job. In this community I learned new skills that we get to use in my accounting career. Having the same goals is important in the Accounting Society community. The leaders are responsible for teaching the students new skills and giving more options, so we can get used to new environment. At every meeting we apply a proper genre which is formal and that is because is related to business in which students’ network with employers from different companies.

In our Accounting Society we use a specific terminology and language. Mark Pagel also says” that once we use the language, we can put our ideas together and be able to contribute to have a success that we couldn’t acquire before” Each student in the Accounting Society discourse community have little knowledge and experience but they get to find out new things in the community. The way we communicate with one another is via emails or phone. The Accounting Society has Instagram Facebook, LinkedIn. There are many meetings in the Accounting Society Community which helps the students being able to expand our communication skills, no matter the situation we incur. In this community we have competitions in which we compete with one another and we use a specific language in this which someone wouldn’t be able to understand if they were to take part.

Being part of a discourse community is an important part of life, because it benefits you to develop yourself in the society and get to know many things that are useful and make you be successful in the future. Having personal experiences, I can show how important is to be part of a discourse community. In my opinion a discourse community is circularly about its objective, how to gain the focus of the public, and various genres.
