My Leadership And Management Skills
People have always recognized me as a responsible and courageous leader, while I knew this about myself, I never had the chance to validate such skills in real life situations. During senior year, I was selected by my classmates to be student council representative. The role would take time and effort, and I would be expected to keep my grades up and set an example at all times. I liked to challenge myself, therefore I accepted this opportunity. However, I didn’t realize just how much pressure it really was. I faced the pressure of my responsibilities on our first event for the year, I was too excited to work and plan that I neglected my academics. The event was for breast cancer awareness day, where we highlighted the importance of breast awareness, education, and research. The day we planned on having this event was the day I had to hand in my physics assignment. I realized this fact only five days prior to the event, I’m not a person who usually panics during crises, I’m very calm and collected, my calmness was often mistaken for not understanding the significance of the problem.
Luckily, I had previously planned my project and the task for the event, which was to design the layout of the fundraiser and make brochures containing information about breast cancer. I managed to spend three days on my physics assignment and hand it in ahead of time, and the next two days completing my task and presenting it a day in advance. Needless to say, the academic year 2017-2018 was a prosperous year, I learned to always plan ahead of time and be ready for any obstacles along the way. That year we hosted fundraisers, bake sales, created afterschool clubs, talent shows, and art exhibitions. Thankfully, I was able to plan and participate in all these activities and still achieve academic excellence. My experiences as a student council representative led me to become an adaptable person and assisted me in building the ability to work under pressure. I learned that I’m a dedicated person that would not give up and will always try my best to achieve my goals.
Additionally, this position helped me become a problem-solver and a great manager, I believe that these very important qualities in a college student. Through my passion of both organizing and managing, I believe I can become successful at Penn State. Penn State is a challenging yet rewarding university which offers a variety of rigorous science and mathematical courses. I believe in challenging myself and I know that Penn State will provide many challenges that will test my abilities and ultimately help me learn and mature as a person. I do not plan on stopping after my education in Penn State. My goal is to use the vast amount of knowledge received and the variety of different experiences from Penn State to pursue. I now know how to conquer the negatives and this will help me succeed at Penn State.
