My Leadership Skills In Construction Industry

When I was in the car on my way to college, surrounded by concrete jungle, I pondered to myself as I was looking at the beauty of the each of the infrastructures in the exquisite city, Kuala Lumpur, architectures are the ones who dream about it, engineers are the one who execute it, but who’s the one doing all the backstage job and never get the credits they deserve? Just like every play, it must have the director, the one who pulls all the string so that the outcome is flawless, the one who is there from beginning till the end. So I did my research, digging more into the construction world. Then, I found it, the perfect course for me.

My leadership skill has been polished throughout my 5 years of being a prefect as I learned how to make better decision and lead my team efficiently. Hence, during my senior year, the principal, all my dearest teachers and friends, they saw a vast potential in me and have voted me to become the Head Girl. The responsibilities that I carried on my shoulder were enormous but I believe in myself, so do my teachers and friends. Not to mention, I also went to a multiple leadership camps that have boost my confidence and aid me to become a more virtuous leader, which is an essential skill needed for my course.

Winning the best female participant for the district level leadership camp enables me to learn how to become a more engaging leader. Aside from that, taking Mathematics as one of my core subjects in A-Level nurtured my systematic thinking and analytical nature. I have also participate in Asean Science & Math Olympiad (ASMO) and International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) for both Science and Mathematics. I always volunteered to teach my friends, even some students from other school in my region about Mathematics. Based on that experience, I know that I am a natural teacher. Compassionate and zealous but also very disciplined and goal-oriented.

Meanwhile, in Economics and Geography to explore more about my course, I was able to secure a work attachment under United Engineers Malaysia (UEM) Sunrise. Being taken under the wing of one of the executive managers, Mr. Loi, at the Head, Procurement & Contracts Department really unveil the challenges I will be facing in the future. Gradually, the learning process began, he guided me so that I can grasp the idea of my work scope. Starting from the basic of the basic, he teached me in regards of the Project Life Cycle which refers to the four-step process that is followed by nearly all project managers when moving through stages of project completion.

The job plays a major role throughout the project life cycle where they need to be responsible with the procurement, planning authorities, budgeting, contracting, document management and other areas to ensure that the construction project reaches a desired conclusion. In addition, the Pre & Post Contract Administration Handbook prepared by the company really assist me throughout the work attachment. Then, Mr Loi also brought me to visit one of UEM Sunrise’s prosperous project, the Arcoris Mont Kiara, conceptualised and designed by none other than the world-renowned architectural practice, Fosters + Partners, I was wholly enthralled by how meticulous the infrastructure is.

However, none of that will happen if it was not because of a good management which pays attention even to the minuscule details. People often question me, “why do you choose this course?” “is that even a real job?”, being the only one who applied for this course in my whole batch is uncanny yet I believe that this course is the perfect one for me. I am determined to venture the endless possibilities that the world can offers, starting from choosing this course.
