My Motivation To Study Marketing At The University Of Michigan

I am eager to expand my intellectual horizons as a young and curious student of the Ross School at the University of Michigan. Since the day I visited my older sister, Gabriella Hassan, a current senior enrolled in the Honors Program, I have known that the University of Michigan is a unique and special place, with both an inviting social environment and a promising academic program. Having explored the exceptional avenues through which one may study these fields at the University’s business school, I would elect to major in Marketing. It would be a privilege to conduct research in the field, utilizing the many resources that Ross has to offer, such as its many distinguished professors, and put thought into action.

In Ross’s renowned department, I will develop my scholarship through the creative and critical spark of class discussion with professors like Ms. Amy Angell, through “Consumer Behavior”, and Dr. John Branch, through “International Marketing.” Along with the concentration of marketing, I am also fascinated by the study of Psychology. My experience this past summer as a participant in the “Leadership in the Business World” program at Wharton taught me invaluable lessons that I have already begun to apply. The lectures, led by both professors and entrepreneurs, were remarkable, I thought, for their philanthropic undertakings. Through leading by example, the speakers inspired my work as a marketing intern for the distinguished organization, Larger than Life. This non-profit organization aids families of children with cancer that live in Israel — regardless of faith, race, or gender — with the hope that a child with a positive mindset and improved quality of life, will be more likely to heal.

Propelled by my focus on Corporate Social Responsibility for Larger than Life and my interest in psychology, inspired by AP Psychology, I have decided to pursue a psychology minor through the school of Literature, Science, and the Arts. I look forward to applying for the Honors program and conducting research in my field through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, as well as writing an honors thesis, if accepted. I will reach out to a professor with whom my interests in “development” for nonprofit and social enterprise would be most synergistic.

Inside as well as outside of the classroom, I hope to become active as a member in The Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP), to create impact on social issues in need of innovative solutions. Additionally, it would be truly meaningful to become a participant of The Sanger Leadership Center, and learn leadership skills essential to invoking positive change through the program’s various workshops and initiatives. It would be heartening to organize a Larger than Life chapter at the University of Michigan for the purpose of extending this philanthropy to college campuses.

My efforts and devotion to the organization have developed my leadership and systematized organizational skills, and have ingrained in me both the humility and value of meaningfully contributing to a larger community and a cause that moves me.
