My Motivation To Take The Dentistry Course
Being an immigrant has given me the opportunities to open my mind to things I would never have been able to experience. I explored the art and literature stream as well as the math and science stream. Both sides broadened my knowledge and brewed my interest. Yet, this placed me at a crossroads.
Then, I found dentistry. Though I didn't organically love it, I eventually learnt that it intertwined everything I loved. I love the fact that it has the intricacy, patience and abstract exploration of art. Conjointly, I like that it teaches me something new daily and gives the thrill of problem solving that science has always given. I also like that it is ever expanding; with new methods, new technology and new discoveries. I believe that the continuous evolution of the sector would allow for me to continue to learn and expand my knowledge even after the course. Alongside an increasing knowledge on dentistry, and a continuous hunt for more, I began to talk to local dentists. We discussed how dentistry is full of possibilities, continues to evolve as technology advances and a career that was lacking female representation. I'm especially grateful that it gives you the opportunity to help and contribute within a community. This fuelled my willpower to pursue it. When I shadowed, I observed the intricate workings of a dentist. I learnt that the work required immense patience and attentiveness, which I believe I've obtained over time. I'll soon be volunteering at a general hospital, so that I can further my understanding, and to enable me to gain more experience.
Outside of my Dentist based adventures, I have a range of projects and interests. I am currently the Deputy Head Girl in school. My position requires working with a group of 22 prefects. I've been in the leadership team for 2 years now. With a new team this year, and experience from before, I've managed to get the team working efficiently on things such as charity events, and improving team communication.
This advanced my communication skills and allowed me to improve my team-working abilities. It also increased my confidence, allowing me to contribute with passion. I actually proposed an 'Anti-Bullying' day at school last year and after having it approved, conducted an event that boosted the spirit of the students. It was such a success, that this year, Anti-Bullying day turned into Anti-Bullying week! Correspondingly, for 5 years, I ran a club called "The World Scholar's Cup" with 12 other students. There, I train others to compete in an international competition. Within the club, I improved my leadership dexterity, my patience and again, my team-working capabilities. I'm also in MUN, where I debate with others about world problems and the solutions to them. This helped me to enhance my presentation abilities and problem solving skills. I also refined my precise and steady movements and multi-tasking skills which I know dentists need. I've done this by doing a traditional dance called "joget", where steady hands is necessary whilst moving around with a partner. I believe that this has also fine tuned my practical skills. Though my partner and I were the least experienced couple and made the most mistakes during practice, when it came to the final performance, we executed it perfectly. I enjoyed refining myself, and the criticism I had received from my mentors. The criticism helped motivate me to do better and armoured me with tough skin which I will use to succeed in Dentistry.
I am confident that with the skills that I have, I am capable to take on dentistry. I know that if given the chance to do the course, there will be times where I fall. However, know that I will keep them to a minimum and rise up to pursue my goals with the same tenacity and resilience as I've always had.
