Crafting My Path to Success: A Personal Professional Development Plan

Personal development plan: example for students (essay)

In this professional development plan (essay), I will be discussing my passion for Quantity Surveying and how I plan to achieve my long-term goal of working abroad. Having completed my Higher National Diploma in this field, I believe that setting achievable goals is crucial for success. By setting short and medium-term goals, I can ensure that I am on track to achieve my long-term plan, and I am determined to take on any challenges that come my way. One of my short-term goals is to gain experience working in the construction industry to develop my skills as a Quantity Surveyor. Additionally, I plan to take courses and attend seminars to stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies. I also plan to network with industry professionals to expand my knowledge and make connections that can help me achieve my long-term goal of working abroad. Overall, my professional development plan involves a commitment to lifelong learning and pursuing opportunities that will help me achieve my career aspirations as a Quantity Surveyor.

Short Term Goals (Next 12 months)

  1. Finish my dissertation related to construction law successfully
  2. Complete my degree in Quantity Surveyor with a first class honors
  3. Have more experience in taking off quantities.

To achieve this I should also need to study at RICS accredited university to gain a first class degree with a dissertation relevant to construction law since my long term goal is to be an adjudicator.

Key skills I need to be developed to be an adjudicator:

  • Excellent communication skills and Presentation skills
  • Public speaking skills
  • Dispute solving skills and analytical approach
  • Ability to present the dispute scenario.

My personal status in the company and elementary skills are satisfactory and my knowledge is generally sound for my level of work. I have the confident from proving that I could handle the pressure of hard situation even with sleep deprivation where I can manage my studies and as well as my work even though at times lack of balancing the work and the studies may become weakness in my short term goal. Since working as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor for main contractor I would be able to get more experience in taking off quantities which an essential requirement for my career path as a Quantity Surveyor. During my studies I have learnt that I need to be selfish occasionally otherwise other people wants and needs may distract my objectives. Specially when an extensive input is required to achieve a good grade on my dissertation module.

Medium Term Goals (Next 2-3 years)

  1. Be a part of a consultancy firm
  2. Gain more experience in Contractual practices
  3. Complete MSc in Dispute resolution construction law successfully
  4. Be a presenter in front of Dispute Adjudication Board(DAB)
  5. Start my RICS associate.

When the short term goals are achieved I will also have 3 years’ worth of work experience under a main contractor. Then I would consider work under a consultancy firm where I hope to receive the experience in contractual practices. This stage I will achieve the academic and professional qualification for my long term goal to be a successful adjudicator.

Achieving MSc in Dispute Resolution Construction Law would motivate me throughout my journey as a postgraduate. My communication and negotiation skills with client and subcontractors which I have developed through completing my university presentations will be useful to improve communication skills further. My presentation skills can be developed by attending to more meetings and discussions with parties where those skills may require to present dispute scenarios in front of a Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) as a presenter.

Physical and mental fitness play very important role in my life especially when it approaches to my busy life. A small amount of stress could be good to motivate me to perform well but the multiple challenges of day-to-day such as sitting in traffic, meeting and deadlines and paying bills may push me beyond my ability to cope. Improving the fitness level will be self-evident. I will allocate specific time during the weekdays and allocate time at weekend to improve my personal fitness.

Long Term Goals (Beyond 3 years)

  1. Complete Diploma in Adjudication in the construction successfully
  2. Spend my marriage life happily with my family
  3. Submit more evidences onto RICS managed
  4. Work on more dispute cases and to give most appropriate decisions on that
  5. Be a qualified and successful Adjudicator
  6. Give my service to the all over the world as a qualified Adjudicator.

On successful completion of level 5 qualification I will encounter the related National Occupational Standards and be able to seek fee-earning work as an adjudicator. By gaining more experience in dispute resolution I could improve planning and decision making skills for my career.

At work I am very proactive towards appraisals. It will be a great skill to evaluate how to improve tasks, undertaken feedback, attitudes, positive thinking through reflection and mutual understanding. I believe, these appraisals would give great support to improve my above mentioned strengths, opportunities and by mitigating the weakness and threats and finally to achieve my long term goals. After my studies, I am seeking to work as a dynamic adjudicator with good success and eventually with good experience behind me with RICS qualification to the all over the world.
