My Potential To Get A Degree In Law

Law is a vital part of society, without it, there would be no maintaining of order. Without the Law in place, a so-called 'state of nature' would be inevitable. I'm keen to learn how human rights law, criminal law, corporate law is applied to real case situations and how the British criminal justice system incorporates laws to benefit our society as a whole. It is, for this reason, I believe I should study Law, a subject serving our wider community and beyond is immensely important.

To further my knowledge of the legal system, I've visited the Old Baileys court on multiple occasions, witnessing how barristers present their case and how they persuade the jury was an eye-catching experience. In one case, the defendant had been accused of murdering his flatmate using the name of self-defence accusing the victim of attacking him first, the defendant was later found guilty. After watching a case on a murder that occurred locally to where I live really added that element of relatability giving me more reason to study the law for myself and how I can do my best by it. Having taken part in a twelve-week work placement with Urban Lawyers, I feel as though I have a fundamental grasp on the subject of the law. I was given the chance to work on a mock trial where I was able to apply my analytical and interpreting skills to examine the case thoroughly. This opportunity allowed me personally, to experience what it'd be like for a day in the life of a lawyer. We were also given the chance to create a presentation for a prison project targeted at improving the inmate's life outside prison.

Discussing life after prison enabled us to understand what it would be like to find a job and the limitations that come with it. This gave us the chance to understand the law from different perspectives and how it affects every individual even those who take the law into their own hands. Studying A-Level English Literature, History, and Philosophy enables me to explore the Law in every avenue of everyday life. Having attended many taster days for Law is what I believe made my choice solid, as every time I got to engage with it, every time there was an element of excitement, something I wish to experience in university life as part of the law degree. Universities teaching such a wide range of Law makes me even more enticed, to be able to deepen my knowledge of the law from all corners is what I aspire to achieve. I've also attended a four day Law summer school at SOAS, attending lectures on different types of Law for example; EU Law, South Asian law, and taking part in seminars.

This gave a brief insight into university life, which was extremely beneficial. Seminars were an integral part of my journey exploring this course, leading me to research into south Asian law comparing differences in the UK legal system. My EPQ displays my passion for the history of the law. Independently researching Martin Luther King and his role in the civil rights movement, I was able to select varied types of research to come to an overall argument, skills invaluable for higher education. Outside of academia, I occasionally volunteer for charities in need such as Human Appeal. This involves a range of activities: promoting the charity and its causes, leaflets, fundraising, and organising a fun day for the community. I've also taken part in a charity organised by students and myself called 'Project Home', an ongoing charity that has built a successful platform. It is a project we built together and one that is appealing for a very worthy cause. Homelessness is a prominent problem in my area, which explains the success the project has gained, being that it's an important issue and one that is not as recognised as much. I like to think volunteering is a gift in itself because of the amount of joy that is experienced while investing time in causes that matter. To summarise, I'm confident I will thrive in the environment of the law degree, drawing on my self-discipline and adaptability.
