NFL Football Is Great, But College Football - the Best!

It is no secret that football is the most popular sport in America. Between college and professional football both combine to create billion dollar businesses. The game appeals to many and has been cemented as major apart of American culture. Many love to watch it, and that need can be satisfied almost every night of the week. College teams play on Fridays and Saturdays, while NFL teams play on Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Some people think that the NFL is more entertaining to watch because they’re all professional athletes, but that is not true at all. Therefore, Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision college football is more entertaining to watch than the NFL due to the tradition, fanbases, and styles of play.

First of all, college football is built on tradition due to how long the game has been played. It has been in existence for 150 years, while the NFL has only been around for 100 years. College teams are funded by their respected universities and most have had a team for around 150 years. Since these teams have been around for many years, there have been a lot of rivals that have emerged. These rivalries have created many great games of entertaining football. For example, the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State. The nickname of this rivalry is called “The Game” due to the physicality, hatred for one another, and entertaining football. Also, the fan bases of these colleges are compared to no other. Attendance is greater than ever and so is the emotional connection. Most people who root for a particular team have gone to that university, known someone who has attended, or grew up in the area. Due to this emotional connection to the universities it creates a louder and more intense games to watch. Lastly, the styles of play are completely different. College teams usually have a pass first, run second mentality. This type of play calling creates more big plays, scoring, and a faster pace. This leads to more entertaining games because most fans love to see high scoring games rather than low scoring.

Also, NFL football still has some tradition because it has been around for many years. The league has been around for 100 year but still not as long as college football. There is only two original members of the NFL since the inaugural season. Those original teams are the Arizona Cardinals and the Chicago Bears. Even in more recent years teams have been added, some have dropped out completely, and others have changed cities. They’re all privately funded companies and are strictly businesses. They still have some great rivalries due to the history of the league but not as intense as colleges. Most consider that the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers have the best rivalry in the NFL. That rivalry tries to get hyped up every year, but the passion between the fans and players is nothing compared to college football. The fans are still loyal and passionate, but not as much as college fans. People tend to root for their local team, if they even have one. The stadiums have lower capacity so it prevents the illusion of an empty stadium. Newly relocated teams like the LA Chargers have been struggling to fill their stadium which only holds 27,000. While teams like University of Michigan, Ohio state, and Penn State consistently have well over 100,000 people in attendance for their games. Lastly, the play calling is way different. They of have a run first, pass second mentality. This creates a slower pace of the game, less scores, and not as many big plays. Generally, fans love to see shootouts between opponents rather than defensive battles.

Therefore, college football is more entertaining to watch than NFL football. College football has been in existence longer which has created a greater tradition. They also have more loyal fans due to a greater emotional connection to the university compared to a NFL franchise. Lastly, college has a more entertaining style of play because of more explosive plays and has a faster pace. Both leagues have created a lot of fans, revenue, and special moments, but college football far greater games to watch.
