Our Dreams Do Come True
What is a dream? A dream is a condition or achievement that is longed for, it is a goal. In my lifetime I have had many dreams and hope to accomplish most of them. Growing up one of my dreams was to attend college in America. I knew it would be difficult but I was determined to carry out my dream regardless of what obstacles were standing in my way.
Being born in Egypt made my dream even more difficult to achieve. The process of coming to America is not easy itself. There are several factors that need to be considered before I can even think about leaving Egypt. Like, would I be granted a visa, where would I live, where would I work and will I be able to adjust to the American way of life? Once I was granted permission to come to America the rest of these obstacles seemed small. Several times, I was ready to give up on my dream. It seemed harder and harder for me to be able to live out my dream. A lot of my friends who were also applying for Visas discouraged me since most of them were not approved to come to America.
There are several excellent colleges in Egypt, including the American University in Cairo. In order to attend this college you must graduate at the top of your high school class and above all it is very expensive. There are several people who attend college in Egypt and are very successful in their careers however; my dream was to study here. Also, since jobs are not that easy to come by there, that would have made me unable to afford going to school there. Attending college in America made the most sense to me since I had planned on spending the rest of my life here.
After several years of planning we set forth on our journey to America, after arriving here, the chances of me attending college looked slim. Several things held me back. Life here was very different, I needed to get used to the way things were and learn the language very quickly. Since there were exams that needed to be passed in order for me to be accepted into a college, I focused all my time and energy on them, while trying to keep my job and some sort of social life. It took a lot of work and a lot of studying, but finally, I passed. Here I am today living out my dream, attending college and working. What seemed impossible years ago has now become a reality. I have set my sights on a college degree and with hard work I can achieve it.
From this experience I learned that no matter what your dreams are in life and how hard it seems to achieve them, if you put your mind to it you would be able to make them come true. Once I graduate all the hard times will seem worth it, and I will be ready to set forth new goals and dreams to achieve. Something so simple to one is a dream come true of another.
