Personal Statement on Becoming a Physician Assistant
As a young adult, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness that required frequent visits to healthcare providers. These experiences opened my eyes to the importance of compassionate care and the difference it can make in a patient's life. From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare as a physician assistant and in this eesay I explain my academic path.
As I explored my options, I became drawn to the physician assistant profession. The PA model of care aligns with my values of patient-centered care, collaboration, and lifelong learning. I was impressed by the flexibility of the PA role, allowing for autonomy while also working closely with a supervising physician. A Physician Assistant (PA) is a healthcare professional who practices medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician. PAs are trained to diagnose and treat medical conditions, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and perform various medical procedures. Some of the typical tasks that a physician assistant may perform include:
- Conducting patient interviews and medical histories
- Performing physical exams and diagnostic tests
- Diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries
- Prescribing medications and therapies
- Assisting in surgical procedures
- Educating patients and families about medical conditions and treatment options
- Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests
- Developing treatment plans and monitoring patient progress
- Collaborating with physicians and other healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care
- Performing procedures such as suturing, splinting, and casting.
- Performing physical exams and diagnostic tests
PAs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, private practices, and long-term care facilities. They often specialize in certain areas of medicine, such as cardiology, oncology, or emergency medicine. The role of a PA may vary depending on the specialty and the specific needs of the healthcare setting.
After completing my undergraduate degree in Biology, I worked as a medical scribe in an emergency department. This experience gave me a firsthand look at the daily life of a healthcare provider, and strengthened my desire to become a PA. I saw the impact that PAs had on patient care, and the unique role they played in the healthcare team.
As I prepare to apply to PA programs, I am excited about the opportunities that this profession offers. I am particularly interested in working in primary care, where I can develop long-term relationships with patients and provide comprehensive care. I am also passionate about health education and disease prevention, and hope to incorporate these aspects into my practice.
In addition to my academic and clinical experiences, I am committed to serving my community through volunteering and advocacy. I have volunteered at a free clinic, providing healthcare services to underserved populations. I have also advocated for healthcare reform and increased access to care.
Becoming a PA is not just a career goal for me, it is a personal mission. I am committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to my patients and working collaboratively with other healthcare providers to improve health outcomes. I am excited about the opportunities that this profession offers, and I look forward to making a positive impact in the lives of my patients.
