Abortion from Different Perspectives: A Personal Opinion
It is an opinion on abortion essay. Abortion is a very argumentative topic. There will be people with the opinion that abortion is not right because they are killing an innocent babys life and others say that they are for abortion and that if mothers can't or don't want to have a baby they shouldn't need to therefore they should be entitled to abort the baby.
Legality of Abortion in Different Countries
In some countries abortion is not legal and in others it is. Brazil has not completly restricted abortion but woman can't just get an abortion without a valid reason. There are only a few valid reasons for woman to have an abortion in brazil for example a woman had been raped so could get an abortion. Abortion is no longer illegal in Canada but it was up until 1988. Abortion is legal in Russia. Russia carrys out the most abortions each year. The main reasons that russia allow abortion is rape, health risks, imprisonment of the woman, the risk of death of the mother of the baby or physical or mental disabilities to the baby. In the UK abortion has been legal since the abortion act in 1967. It is only legal when carried out by a doctor and it also must be signed off by 2 other doctors. Doctors don't always have to go through with carring out the abortion or signing it off if they don't want to. There would have to be a strong and good reason if the doctor didn't feel able to go through with it.
Two Main Types of Abortion
They are medical abortion which is a pill you take called the abortion pill, its taking medicine to to end the pregnancy. The other method is surgical abortion, this is when a procedure to remove the pregnancy.
Before having an abortion you have to attend assessment appointments. Assessment appointments mostly happen in the clinic or hospital but can also be attended through a phone or video. The things you would take about in this assessment would be the reason why you want this abortion and if you are 100% with your decision. You would also talk to a nurse or doctor about which method they should use to carry out the abortion. You can be offered an ultrasound to see how far on you are with the pregnancy, you can be offered testing for an STD and a few more. Once you are completely sure you want to go through with the abortion then you have to sign a consent form and the hospital or clinic will arrange a date for the abortion to happen.
Medical abortion is when you take two different types of medicines to end the pregnancy. The medicines are provided to you by the hospital or clinic and you usually take them 1 or 2 days apart. You take the first tablet in the hospital or clinic and then return to doing your everyday routines. The second tablet is taken 1 or 2 days after the first one and this one can be taken at home if you are less than 10 weeks pregnant but if you are over 10 weeks you have to take the tablet at the clinic or hospital. 4 to 6 hours after taking the second tablet the lining of the womb starts to break down then this causes you to feel pain and then there's bleeding and the loss of pregnancy. Occasionally the pregnancy doesn't pass and an operation is needed to remove it.
Surgical abortion means that the baby is removed from the womb by the woman having an operation. This may be carried out by local anaesthetic to numb the cervix, conscious sedation is when you are relaxed but awake or deep sedation where you are sleeping. If you choose the last method, deep sedation the woman will not remember anything and will not be awake during the operation. Before a surgical abortion you will be asked to take a medicine to open the cervix. This happens a couple of hours,1 or 2 days before the operation depending on the medicine used. There are 2 methods of surgical abortion. The first method is vacuum or suction aspiration, this can be used up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. The other method is dilatation and evacuation, this is used after 14 weeks of pregnancy.
After having an abortion you do not usually need ay other tests or appointments for surgical or medical abortions in hospital. If you have a medical abortion at home then you will need to have a scan to make sure the pregnancy has ended. Both medical and surgical abortions can have some short lived side effects. After the abortion you can take paracetamol or ibuprofen to help with the pain.
Religious Beliefs About Abortion
There is also the religious side to abortion where some faiths tell you you shouldn't have an abortion as this is against your gods wishes and you will be punished for doing this such as the catholic religion believe that life begins at conception and is a gift from god so if you get an abortion you are going against one of the 10 commandments:thou shalt not kill because they class abortion the same as murder.
Christians don't all have the same opinion on abortion. 28% of christans say that having an abortion was morally acceptable and 23% of christians say that it is not a moral issue. Early christians held different beliefs at different times about abortion. There are other religions who all hold their own different ideas about abortion according to their gods.
